Alex Rodriguez, who has a sore left hamstring, said he would play in the
All-Star Game on Tuesday in San Francisco because he owed it to the fans who
gave him the most votes among all starters on both teams. “I’m feeling
pretty good,” said Rodriguez, who leads the majors with 29 home runs and 82
runs batted in. ... Jeff Karstens, a starter who has been on the disabled
list since April 29 with a broken bone in his right leg, pitched three and a
third shutout innings yesterday for the Yankees’ rookie team in the Gulf
Coast League. He gave up three hits and a walk and struck out two. Karstens
will next pitch for Class A Staten Island. ... Another starting pitcher, Phil
Hughes, who is rehabilitating an injured hamstring and a severely sprained
ankle, will pitch tomorrow for Class A Tampa.
