NEW YORK -- After playing in all of the Yankees' first 82 games,
Alex Rodriguez finally missed one on Thursday, as he was sent to
have his strained left hamstring further examined.

The All-Star third baseman left Yankee Stadium shortly before batting
practice to have an MRI taken on his leg, which he originally injured
running out a ground ball on Monday, and returned in time to see the
Yankees score five runs in the second inning against Twins starter
Kevin Slowey.

Rodriguez left the clubhouse without speaking to reporters, but Yankees
manager Joe Torre reported that the results of Rodriguez's MRI were
"normal." Torre said that Rodriguez could return to the lineup in time
to help the Yankees open a three-game weekend series with the Angels on
Friday evening.

"He may know something by [Friday]," Torre said. "I think that not

Rodriguez said he was at 100 percent on Tuesday, and he played the next
two games -- one at third base, the other as a designated hitter -- but
went 0-for-8 on Wednesday to extend his hitless streak to 19 at-bats, his
longest drought of the season.

Torre said that he spoke with Rodriguez before leaving the stadium on

of Thursday's lineup. Rodriguez may have seen action as a ninth-inning
pinch-hitter, but Hideki Matsui made the point moot with a two-run homer
in the eighth off Twins reliever Pat Neshek.

Rodriguez -- who leads the Major Leagues with 28 home runs and 80 RBIs,
batting .314 -- was the Majors' leading vote-getter, appearing on

Back to basics: A few days after telling Torre that he feels he has been
pulling the ball too much, it seems Hideki Matsui has found his stroke.

Matsui is 3-for-7 in his last two games, with a double and a solo homer
off Minnesota ace and reigning American League Cy Young Award winner

do that, which usually isn't good."

But at least for now, the 33-year-old's bat is mechanically sound, and he
has returned to using the whole field. Matsui said his timing as of late
produced the amped-up numbers against the Twins. His Independence Day homer
off Santana -- upping his average to .400 off the left-hander -- punctuated
his efforts to keep from pulling the ball.

Still linked: Torre said that the results produced by Mike Mussina in
Wednesday's loss -- short of two poor pitches in the seventh inning --
might lead him to continue keeping backup catcher Wil Nieves linked to
the 38-year-old right-hander every fifth day around the rotation.

of all the congratulatory messages left after his sterling Major League
debut on Tuesday, though it was no easy task.

during the All-Star break to begin their rehabilitation. ... Phil Hughes
has thrown a bullpen session and is scheduled to continue throwing batting

... Right-hander Jeff Karstens is progressing steadily in his recovery.

mound in hopes of putting his previous start -- an aborted 1 2/3-inning
effort against the A's -- behind him.
