A Rookie Reliever Can’t Shake the Rust for Yankees

Edwar Rami'rez cried at his locker Friday night after a dizzying relief
appearance against Tampa Bay, and Yankees Manager Joe Torre reassured him
yesterday that he should not blame himself. Rami'rez walked four and allowed
a grand slam after not pitching for two weeks.

Some Yankees officials have been puzzled by Torre’s reluctance to use
Rami'rez, who had gaudy strikeout numbers in the minors and struck out the
side in his debut July 3. The thinking is that Rami'rez could have been an
answer for the Yankees’ inconsistent bullpen, but Torre never found out.

Rami'rez was a likely candidate to be sent to the minors after the first game
of yesterday’s doubleheader. He would join a bullpen for Class AAA
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre that also includes the veteran Jim Brower and Chris
Britton, a younger pitcher who has made only three appearances for the
Yankees.

Torre almost always prefers veteran relievers, but the Yankees are having so
much trouble finding trade partners that they are doubtful that they can

out the idea of converting their top prospect, Joba Chamberlain, to the
bullpen

General Manager Brian Cashman and Mark Newman, the senior vice president for
player personnel, watched Chamberlain start for Class AA Trenton at New
Britain on Friday. But that was mainly to evaluate whether Chamberlain should
be promoted to Scranton. Chamberlain struck out seven in four and two-thirds
innings, but he allowed seven runs and nine hits, including three home runs.
He is 4-2 with a 3.43 earned run average for Trenton.

As they search for relievers, the Yankees would also like to add a versatile
player off the bench, having failed in their pursuit of the Los Angeles
Dodgers’ Wilson Betemit. Houston’s Mark Loretta, who interested the Yankees
’ last winter, could also be a target.

“I couldn’t play there,” Schilling said. “I just couldn’t for a lot of
reasons. I think it would make the years that I spent here totally
disingenuous. I think it would make me a phony. I absolutely love their
organization, their commitment to winning, their owner’s commitment to
winning. But I took the Hatfields. And you can’t.”
