Yankees come up with big win vs. Blue Jays By PETER ABRAHAM THE JOURNAL NEWS (Original publication: July 18, 2007) NEW YORK - The Yankees long ago forfeited the luxury of giving it a good effort and coming back to try again the next day. The losses of April and May are debts that come due in July for teams with playoff aspirations. So when Andy Pettitte went pitch for pitch against Roy Halladay last night and the Royals beat the first-place Red Sox at Fenway Park, the Yankees had to find a way to win. "We needed this game desperately," Alex Rodriguez said. "We knew that. We needed to get this win." It took a balk, a hit batter and a wild pitch but the Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 on Robinson Cano's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning. That low rumble in the distance is momentum building. The Yankees have won four straight and eight of their last 10 to close within eight games of Boston in the division race. They still trail Cleveland by seven games in the wild card. Of equal significance, perhaps, is that the Yankees have learned how to win the type of games they lost in the first half of the season. Of their five victories since the All-Star break, four have been by one or two runs. "We're fighting to the end of every game now," first baseman Andy Phillips said. Down 2-1 after the ever-unreliable Kyle Farnsworth allowed a run in the top of the eighth inning, the Yankees came back against Toronto closer Jeremy Accardo in the ninth. Phillips started it with a single. Pinch runner Miguel Cairo stole second, then tried to score on a single by Melky Cabrera that deflected off the glove of the first baseman. Right fielder Alex Rios charged the ball and threw him out at the plate. Cabrera went to second on the throw then stole third, one of several aggressive plays the Yankees made on the bases in the late innings. Accardo walked Johnny Damon then committed a balk when he looked to throw over to first. Cabrera scored the tying run. After Brian Bruney and Luis Vizcaino (6-2) threw scoreless innings, the Yankees ended it. Rodriguez was hit by a pitch then alertly went to second when Casey Janssen bounced a curveball a few feet away from catcher Gregg Zaun. The Jays walked Jorge Posada with one out to face Cano. "You've got a guy hitting .330 and a guy hitting .270, you're going to go after the guy hitting .270," Cano said. "As soon as I saw them walk him, I said, 'This is a chance to do your job.' " Cano swung at the first pitch from Janssen (2-2) and drove it into left field. Rodriguez hit the plate with his arms in the air as the crowd of 51,961 roared. "We gave one away but we were able to snatch one back," manager Joe Torre said. "That was big for all of us." Pettitte threw 116 pitches, his most since tossing 118 for Houston last Aug. 21. The left-hander allowed one run on seven hits and walked three but left nine runners stranded. He struck out a season-best seven. "I haven't felt that good in a while," he said. Halladay was a touch better, allowing five singles over seven innings with three walks and six strikeouts. Like Pettitte, he allowed a run in the first when Rodriguez reached 90 RBI with a single that drove in Damon. The comeback took Farnsworth off the hook. It could be a matter of time before he's off the team. Torre and general manager Brian Cashman expressed their faith in Farnsworth before the game, saying his ability and experience merited continued use in the eighth inning. But Farnsworth disproved that again. He allowed a single by Frank Thomas, threw away a pickoff throw that allowed pinch runner Howie Clark to go to second, then gave up a double to Aaron Hill on a meaty fastball that hung over the plate. Farnsworth has allowed 44 hits and 19 walks in 38 1/3 innings while striking out only 24. He left the clubhouse as soon as the media was allowed in and did not comment.
