Kei Igawa could determine his fate in the Yankees rotation when he takes the
hill against the Devil Rays in the first game of doubleheader on Saturday at
Yankee Stadium.

A couple of the Yankees' rookie pitchers, Phil Hughes and Jeff Karstens --
both of whom are coming back from injuries -- came to the Bronx to throw
bullpen sessions on Thursday before heading to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre
for final tune-ups.

The presence of Hughes and Karstens may or may not have stirred up job
security questions for Igawa as the fifth starter, manager Joe Torre said.

"I certainly don't want to go there, because if I happen to stir something
that he's not thinking about, that's probably not a good idea," manager Joe

aware of it. And I'd like to believe he knows what type of pitcher he was in
Japan and he certainly is not looking for a free ride here. He just wants to
get things straightened out and [he's] looking to find that as soon as
possible."

Countering for the Devil Rays will be Jason Hammel, who owns a 1-0 record and
6.11 ERA over 17 2/3 innings this season. The right-hander has managed to
strike out just over a batter per inning, as he's fanned 18 on the year.

In the second game, the Yankees will send Matt DeSalvo to the mound for his
first appearance in the Major Leagues since June 4. In his last two outing
for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, DeSalvo allowed nine hits and three runs
over 14 1/3 innings, striking out 11 and walking four along the way.

TB: RHP Jason Hammel (1-0, 6.11 ERA)
Hammel pitched one scoreless inning against the Yankees when the teams met
for a four-game series after the All-Star Game, but this will be the
right-hander's first start of the season. Hammel pitched 6 2/3 innings of
relief on June 13 against the Padres. That marked his longest outing of the
year.

NYY: LHP Kei Igawa (2-2, 6.97 ERA)
Igawa wasn't consistent in his last start against the Blue Jays, but he
pitched well enough to record a no-decision in his five-inning effort at
Yankee Stadium. The left-hander allowed home runs to Troy Glaus and Vernon
Wells and gave up three runs total off seven hits.

Game 2
TB: LHP J.P. Howell (1-3, 6.62 ERA)
Howell did not have a good ending to the first half when he started against
the Red Sox on July 5 at Fenway Park and did not make it out of the first
inning. He allowed six runs on six hits in 2/3 of an inning to take the loss
in a 15-4 Red Sox win.

NYY: RHP Matt DeSalvo (2-2, 6.97 ERA)
In his last appearance before being demoted to the Minors, DeSalvo allowed
two runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings against the White Sox on June 4.

Player to watch
Akinori Iwamura handled his Japanese counterpart just fine when he and Igawa
faced each other for the first time in the Major Leagues back in April.
Iwamura went 2-for-2 with a double and RBI against the left-hander.
