Yankees acquire Jose Molina to replace Nieves

NEW YORK - Backup catcher Wil Nieves had his best game as a Yankee last
night, going 2 for 3 with two doubles, two sacrifices and two RBI in the
second game of the doubleheader against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

He was then called into the office of manager Joe Torre and told he had been
replaced on the roster.

The Yankees acquired catcher Jose Molina from the Los Angeles Angels in
exchange for Double-A reliever Jeff Kennard.

"He can catch and throw extremely well," general manager Brian Cashman said
of Molina. "He's a quality backup catcher at the very least. We feel we
upgraded, and that's obviously the name of the game. ... We had a chance to
do something, and I could not ignore the opportunity."

The 32-year-old Molina hit .224 with 10 RBI in 40 games for Anaheim. He
became expendable when Mike Napoli came off the disabled list on Friday.
"Really, it's still a shock," Molina said after going 0 for 2 in the Angels'
5-2 loss at Minnesota. "It's hard sometimes to take it because you have been
here for so many years. But the way I have to see it is it's a new
opportunity."

Nieves will be designated for assignment once Molina joins the team, likely
today.
Nieves hit .164 with eight RBI in 26 games. Kennard, 25, was 1-4 with a 2.73
ERA in 31 appearances for Trenton.

More trade talk: If Tampa Bay infielder Ty Wigginton is auditioning for the
Yankees, they must be impressed.

He was 3 for 8 with a homer in the doubleheader, raising his batting average
to .280. He has 15 homers and 48 RBI.
A published report suggested the Devil Rays would be willing to trade
Wigginton to the Yankees for right-handed reliever Scott Proctor.

Torre said the Yankees are looking for an offensive-minded player they can
plug into different positions.

"When you play day-in and day- out, eventually somebody is going to need a
blow," he said. "You'd like to have someone that could be someone you could
plug in with the ability so there's not a big dropoff."
Proctor has struggled in recent outings, allowing four runs on eight hits
(three of them home runs) in 5 1/3 innings.
