Yankees closer has helped Vizcaino get back on track

KANSAS CITY -- Struggling through his first few months with the Yankees, Luis
Vizcaino needed a shoulder to lean on. Mariano Rivera offered.
Now, with Vizcaino plugging away as one of the club's more reliable
relievers, Rivera's gesture is paying dividends. But the closer seems
reluctant to take much credit for Vizcaino's success.

"It's my job," Rivera said. "I think we have to accept that it's more than
pitching. I've been here for [13] years and I have seen a lot. If I can help
anybody, any of my teammates, to be better, I'm going to do that."

Yankees manager Joe Torre has said that Rivera's influence could have played
a major role for Vizcaino, who is 6-1 with a 0.99 ERA in 29 games since
May 28, including a scoreless eighth inning on Monday.

"I'm more confident," Vizcaino said. "I'm throwing the ball where it's
supposed to go. This is what happens. I know I feel like every pitch, I have
concentration."

Torre recalled having a casual conversation with Rivera in the visitors'
clubhouse at Colorado's Coors Field in June, discussing the continuing
tutelage of Vizcaino. The consensus was that the 32-year-old should be
brought along slowly and with a soft touch.

Vizcaino's attitude may have been shaken somewhat by a slow beginning in
pinstripes, as he went 2-1 with a 7.66 ERA in his first 24 games and, though
he opened with a few successful games, he soon found himself in mop-up
relief.

"He wanted to do some good for the team," Rivera said. "He was doing so good
in Spring Training. As a pitcher, I see a lot of guys that try to do some
good -- try to impress. You end up doing the wrong thing. I would say that
was what he was doing. Definitely, he wanted to do good, but everything he
was doing was wrong. It was bad. So we worked at it."

Mechanical adjustments with pitching coach Ron Guidry helped Vizcaino's
slider regain some bite, but Rivera's coaching could have done the same for
his demeanor.

"That's the most important," Rivera said. "Everything we're seeing now is a
result of hard work. I'm glad he's doing what he's doing. I had no doubt he
was capable of doing that."

Vizcaino is not the first success story in Rivera's log. Former reliever
Tanyon Sturtze latched on as Rivera's catch partner shortly after joining the
club, and Rivera recalled with a grin how Ramiro Mendoza once tagged along
like a little brother.

"Whenever I moved, he moved," Rivera said. "And that's good. He wanted to get

Club brass meets: A gathering of Yankees executives convened for hours at
Legends Field in Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday, discussing possible personnel
maneuvers with the July 31 trade deadline approaching, The Associated Press
reported.

Principal owner George Steinbrenner sat in on the meetings for 90 minutes,
which were attended by general partner Hal Steinbrenner, general manager
Brian Cashman, team president Randy Levine and chief operating officer Lonn

In Kansas City, Torre said that he spoke with Cashman early in the morning
and, though he did not wish to misconstrue that trades might be imminent,

example of one instance where the club was able to upgrade over what it was

seriously at it," Torre said. "I think we understand that there are still a

scouting Damon Oppenheimer were also reported to be in attendance at the

Hughes keeps cruising: Right-hander Phil Hughes, making his fourth rehab
start, pitched six scoreless innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on
Tuesday. Hughes, 20, allowed two hits, walked one and struck out seven in the
performance against Louisville. The Yankees believe Hughes could still be one
or two rehab starts away from the Major Leagues.

Moving on up: Both of the Yankees' prized first-round pitching prospects from
last year were promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre late Monday, with
right-handers Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy moving up to the

Torre didn't rule out that the move could spell future callups for both
players this season, given appropriate situations and needs.

Chamberlain, 21, ranks third in the system with 115 strikeouts and had
Cashman on hand for his last start on July 20 at New Britain, where it was
speculated that the Yankees might consider promoting Chamberlain to help the
Major League bullpen.

Cashman said last weekend that Chamberlain would remain in the rotation at
this time, but Torre left open the possibility, saying that he would leave
such decisions in the hands of his player evaluation personnel.

Kennedy, 22, was the Yankees' first overall pick in the 2006 First-Year
Player Draft, and is 11-2 between Class A Tampa and Double-A Trenton. He
leads all Yankees farmhands with 129 strikeouts and is second with a 1.85
ERA.

In corresponding moves, the Yankees sent Tyler Clippard and Chase Wright --
both of whom appeared in the Major League rotation this season -- to Double-A

Wednesday, with right-hander Mike Mussina (4-7, 4.97 ERA) going up against
Royals right-hander Gil Meche (7-6, 3.63 ERA). First pitch is set for 8:10
p.m. ET on the YES Network.
