No Hughes, No Chamberlain, No Deal Likely for Teixeira

沒有Hughes, 沒有Chamberlain, 沒有交易到Teixeira的可能

KANSAS CITY, Mo., July 24 — Two vitally important players to the Yankees’
 future are pitchers Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes. The Yankees’
 unwillingness to part with either will have ramifications before the trading
deadline next Tuesday.

Without giving up Hughes or Chamberlain, the Yankees will probably have no
chance to acquire first baseman Mark Teixeira from the Texas Rangers. General
Manager Brian Cashman is closely guarding both players, so there is a greater
chance that they will affect the Yankees on their own than through a deal.

Hughes started for Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday, throwing six
shutout innings, allowing two hits, striking out seven and throwing 73
pitches in a 4-0 victory over Louisville. He is tentatively scheduled for one
more start as he recovers from hamstring and ankle injuries.

Hughes will rejoin the Yankees as soon as he is ready, replacing Kei Igawa in
the rotation. The question is whether Chamberlain will eventually join him in
New York.

It would be quite a jump for Chamberlain, who started the season in Class A
Tampa and was promoted to Scranton along with another starter, Ian Kennedy,
from Class AA Trenton on Tuesday. Manager Joe Torre said that while the
Yankees still envisioned Chamberlain as a starter, he could be a relief
option down the stretch.

Chamberlain, 21, was 4-2 with a 3.43 earned run average in seven starts at
Trenton. There are indications that Chamberlain would favor a temporary move
to the bullpen, although it seems unlikely this late in his first
professional season.

Chamberlain’s potential move to the bullpen was not the focus of Tuesday’s
organizational meeting in Tampa, Fla. But all of the top Yankees’ executives
were there, including George Steinbrenner, the principal owner, and his sons,
Hank and Hal; Randy Levine, the team president; Lonn Trost, the chief
operating officer; Cashman; Mark Newman, the senior vice president for player
development; Damon Oppenheimer, the vice president for amateur scouting; the
special adviser Gene Michael; and the senior vice president Felix Lopez.

The group met for several hours to discuss alternatives before the trading
deadline, with no deals imminent and with the acquisition of Teixeira looking
doubtful, despite reports that the Rangers were actively shopping him.

DAMON GETTING HITS, NOT HOMERS Johnny Damon said it was no coincidence that
his power numbers dipped the year after they rose. He hit 20 homers for
Boston in 2004 and just 10 the next year. As a Yankee last season, he hit 24
homers. Now, he has five.

Damon said teams were back to pitching him away, rarely giving him inside

After an 0-for-17 slide dropped his average to .233 entering Friday’s game,
Damon was 7 for 16 coming into Tuesday’s game. He has been taking pitches
the other way, as he did when he slashed a two-run double Monday, and he is
still pulling the ball for hits, as he did with a single that same game.

“I think I am there at the plate,” Damon said. “It’s just been a matter
of getting stuff to count. That’s what really entices people around baseball
and gets them to notice. But the guys know what I mean to the team.”

VIZCAi'NO CREDITS RIVERA When the Arizona Diamondbacks played host to the
Yankees for two exhibition games in 2006, Luis Vizcai'no made sure to
introduce himself to Mariano Rivera. A year later, as his teammate on the
Yankees, Vizcai'no used Rivera’s guidance to help turn around a bad season.

Vizcai'no has emerged as the Yankees’ primary setup reliever, with an E.R.A.

jersey smudged with fake pine-tar stains.

George Brett在那場比賽用被松膠弄髒的球棒, 從洋基的Goose Gossage手中打出全壘打.

Brett, who is now the Royals’ vice president for baseball operations, caught
the first ceremonial pitch from the broadcaster Denny Matthews, who will
receive the Ford C. Frick award Sunday at the Hall of Fame.

Brett現在是皇家隊的副總裁(baseball operations).
