BALTIMORE - The day after a double-play disaster that in effect ruined any
chance of a Yankee comeback, Johnny Damon put the Bombers in front and kept
them there.

Damon went 3-for-5 with a walk and two RBI and scored all four times he
reached base to set the pace in a 10-6 victory over the Orioles yesterday.

"(Saturday) night was a disastrous game for me, but you have to show what
you're made of," said Damon, who had hit into two double plays and gone
0-for-5 in the loss, "Today, I came out and bounced back."

"We're a better team when Johnny is getting on base," said Derek Jeter, who
left the game in the eighth with a jammed left shoulder. He is expected to

In Saturday night's loss, the top four hitters in the Yankees' lineup went
1-for-15 with one walk. Yesterday, those same four - Damon, Jeter, Bobby
Abreu and Alex Rodriguez - had seven hits and eight walks in 22 trips to the
plate, combining for five RBI and six runs scored.

It also moved them a game closer in both the American League East and wild
card races, as Boston and Cleveland each lost yesterday. The Yankees now
trail the Red Sox by eight games in the division and the Indians by four for

A-Rod struck out and grounded into a double play in his first two at-bats
before walking in each of his final three plate appearances, leaving him
stuck at 499 career home runs.

Chien-Ming Wang allowed three runs over six innings to pick up his 12th win,
though he wasn't as sharp as usual. Wang gave up nine hits and walked four,
working his way out of jams in the second, third, fifth and sixth.

"He's made us expect so much, which is to his credit," Torre said. "We assume
he's going to do such and such, so we're surprised when he doesn't. He never
stops competing."

"If I don't come up with it, they score two runs and have Roberts on second
or third with some other guys who are swinging well coming up," Damon said.

Said Orioles manager Dave Trembley: "The key play of the game was Damon
making that catch out there."

The Orioles countered with a run of their own against Luis Vizcaino in the
seventh, making it a one-run game again. But the Yankees broke it open in the
eighth, scoring five times to take a 10-4 lead. Damon, Jeter and Abreu each
scored in the inning, while Damon knocked in a run and Abreu drove in two.

Those runs made it possible for the Yankees to watch the eighth inning
without cringing as Kyle Farnsworth gave back two runs on Roberts' eighth
homer of the year. Torre wasn't messing around with a four-run lead in the
ninth, handing the ball to Mariano Rivera, who allowed two hits but struck
out three to close the game.

"Baltimore is playing well, so we definitely didn't want to get swept," Damon
said. "Hopefully they keep playing well, because they're going up to Boston
