Notes: Damon's bat comes alive
Outfielder looking to play more in field as run, RBI totals rise

KANSAS CITY -- Johnny Damon isn't shy about insisting that when he hits, the
whole team hits -- a point he has made at least twice since the Yankees
touched down in Missouri.

Lately, he's been right. Damon has turned his disappointing season up,
stroking eight hits in his last 15 at-bats in setting the table for a lineup
that produced an eye-popping 63 runs over five games entering play Wednesday.

"Johnny, what he's giving us right now, is really important," Yankees manager
Joe Torre said. "[At the] top of the order, his bat's coming alive and his
legs have been good. His stolen base percentage (18-for-20, .900) is

The difference, Damon said, has been his health and increased workload.
Cautious of aggravating various injuries that ailed the 33-year-old earlier
in the season, the Yankees proceeded with caution regarding Damon, offering
him ample opportunities to rest and avoid the disabled list.

The resting period over and the postseason push in full drive, Damon seems to
be about as chipper as he has been all year. Pointing out that he doesn't
believe his subpar batting average (.246 entering Wednesday) to be as

mentioning that he is looking forward to playing more innings in the field.

designated hitter Hideki Matsui, but Damon could lose at-bats in the near
future when Jason Giambi returns.

Torre acknowledged that the plan for Giambi's return is unsettled. The
manager huddled with bench coach Don Mattingly to discuss possibilities
Wednesday, only to resolve to revisit the topic when Giambi's timetable
becomes more solid.

But Torre said he did not want to underestimate what Damon offers. His swings
Tuesday were loose and free, and Damon has been hitting the ball on the fat
part of the bat and going both ways, items of significant value as the

possibility, the American League Wild Card.

"These guys on this bench respect not only ability but experience, and where
he's done it, and under the pressure where he's done it," Torre said. "That

Giambi nears rehab: Giambi is scheduled to begin a Minor League
rehabilitation assignment Friday for Class A Tampa, The Associated Press
reported, and Giambi is hopeful he will rejoin the Yankees next week.

Giambi, 36, took on-field batting practice for the second time Wednesday and
went through an extensive baserunning session, according to the report.
Giambi said that he is "fired up" and that his recovery process has "gone

overambitious, and gave the impression Giambi could be out longer.

Proctor said he will try to fly home on Yankees off-days but is looking
forward to his second half workload: since burning articles of his equipment
in a bonfire near the Yankee Stadium dugout on June 30, Proctor is 1-0 with a
2.38 ERA in 10 appearances.

Calm after the storm: This is the quieter portion of Shelley Duncan's big
league service, as the rookie slugger -- who made his mark with three homers

last two games.

Torre has said that he likes Duncan's power bat for tight, late-inning
situations, an event that hasn't presented itself as the Yankees have
continued to pound runs. Duncan said he is keeping an optimistic mind.

Reggie Sanders bouncer in the sixth inning. A-Rod had compiled the
second-longest errorless streak by a third baseman in 2007, behind St. Louis'
