KANSAS CITY, Mo., July 23 — Tony Pen~a, the Yankees’ first base coach, said
he would ask to be excused at a certain point during the team’s pregame
scouting meeting Monday because he did not want to be there when the team
discussed his son, Tony Pen~a Jr. His son started at shortstop and batted
ninth for the Kansas City Royals on Monday.

Pen~a(洋基的一壘教練)說他會在星期一的球探會議中要求離席一陣子, 因為他不希望當
球隊討論到他兒子時他在現場.

“I want him to do well and lose the game,” Pen~a said. “I don’t want him

Pen~a said Monday’s game would be his first chance to see his son play in
the majors. Pen~a played in 40 games for the Atlanta Braves last season and
was traded to the Royals in March for a minor league pitcher.

Another major league coach in attendance Monday was not conflicted about his
rooting interest. Dave Duncan, the pitching coach for the St. Louis
Cardinals, was in attendance on a day off to watch his son Shelley play for
the Yankees. Shelley’s brother, Chris, who is an outfielder for the
Cardinals, also came along.

紅雀隊的投手教練Dave Duncan趁著星期一休兵來到球場看他兒子Shelley為洋基打球.
Shelley的弟弟Chris(紅雀的外野手)也一起來看球.

“He asked permission if his brother could come down to the clubhouse after
the game,” Manager Joe Torre said. “Permission granted, yeah.”

Duncan started at designated hitter and batted ninth Monday against the
left-hander Odalis Pe'rez. Melky Cabrera started in right field and Johnny
Damon in center; Torre gave Bobby Abreu the night off. Abreu is 3 for 27 in
his career against Pe'rez.

Duncan擔任DH打第九棒, 面對的是左投手Odalis Pe'rez.
Cabrera擔任先發右外野手.  Damon擔任中外野手.
Torre讓Abreu休息一天. Abreu面對Pe'rez的27打席,打了3支安打.

“We’ll see if we can ride this horse for a little bit and see what happens,
” Torre said of Duncan. He later added, “We’ll take a look at making him a
regular part of what we’re doing, as long as he’s swinging the bat the way
he is.”

"我們會繼讓他上場, 看看以後會怎樣." Torre談論著Duncan.

According to Trent McCotter of the Society for American Baseball Research,
Duncan is the first player since Billy Conigliaro of the 1969 Boston Red Sox
to have three home runs in his first three career games in which he had an
at-bat. He is also the first player with seven runs batted in over his first
three games with a plate appearance since George Bjorkman of the 1983 Houston
Astros.

THE LINE-DRIVE THREAT Players and coaches spoke somberly Monday about the
death of Mike Coolbaugh, a minor league first-base coach who was struck in
the temple by a line drive. Tony Pen~a, said he did not worry about being
killed by a liner but always respected the threat.

“Every time, I don’t take my eye off the bat,” Pen~a said. “If you don’t
see the ball, it’s easy for you to get hit. But sometimes, there are going

Mike Mussina was hit just above his right eye by a line drive from Sandy
Alomar Jr. in 1998. Mussina, who has a scar from the stitches, said his eye
socket blunted the impact of the ball. He estimated he was perhaps 50 feet
from a liner traveling 100 miles an hour.

Mussina was back on the mound within a month, but he said he found himself

CLOSING IN ON NO. 500 Alex Rodriguez could hit his 500th homer against the
same pitcher who served up No. 400. Jorge De La Rosa, who gave up Rodriguez’
s 400th on June 8, 2005, as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers, is the Royals’
 scheduled starter for Thursday.

been hitting, it may not take him until Thursday to reach the milestone.
Although he said he was worried about being jinxed because pitchers must now
use specially marked balls to pitch to him, Rodriguez is showing no signs of
slumping.

AN HONOR FOR CANo' Robinson Cano' was named the American League co-player of
the week, with Tampa Bay’s B. J. Upton. He entered Monday’s game batting
.500 over his last nine games (18 for 36) with 10 runs batted in during that
stretch.

PROCTOR A FATHER AGAIN Reliever Scott Proctor was at Kauffman Stadium several
hours before game time, but he left for the airport by 3:30 p.m. to be with
his wife, Carrie, who gave birth to their third child, a son named Cooper.
Proctor will return Wednesday. The Yankees will continue to carry 13 pitchers
at least until then.

PROCTOR又做了父親

在比賽前幾小時Proctor還在皇家的主場, 但他在下午3:30出發到機場.
他要去陪他老婆. 他老婆剛為他生下他們的第三個小孩, 是個男孩, 取名Cooper.
Proctor星期三會回來. 洋基會持續帶著13位投手比賽直到他回來.
