Rodriguez Home Runs: Count Them Backward

Alex Rodriguez could become the first major league player ever to hit his
500th home run twice.

 In a scene more M. C. Escher than Norman Rockwell, Rodriguez, who has 499
career home runs, could become tangled in an esoteric baseball scoring rule
applied even less often than left-handed catcher’s interference.

The situation stems from a June 28 game that was suspended because of rain
with the Yankees leading the Baltimore Orioles, 8-6, with two outs in the top
of the eighth inning.

The game is set to resume tonight in Baltimore from that point forward as if
the rain had never come, as Major League Baseball rules stipulate.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the league’s official statistician,
all individual numbers from the June 28 game have already counted; Rodriguez
was 0 for 3 with one run batted in. But because of baseball Rule 10.23, all
performance records from the part of the game tonight will be officially
coded as having occurred on June 28 as well.

Unless Manager Joe Torre replaces Rodriguez in the lineup, he will almost
certainly bat in the suspended game. He is expected to be on deck, with
Hideki Matsui at the plate and Derek Jeter on second base when the game
resumes. He will presumably bat in the eighth inning or the ninth tonight, if
not later should the game enter extra innings.

If Rodriguez hits a home run in the resumed game, it will be quite reasonably
celebrated as his 500th, but it technically will be inserted into his June 28
statistics and become his 493rd.

但記錄會記在6月28日, 會成為第493支.

And his home run Wednesday night in Kansas City, previously his 499th, will
be promoted to No. 500.

So, depending on one’s point of view, he will either never have hit his
500th home run, or have hit it twice.

所以補賽過後有兩種情況:
1.他還沒打出500轟.
2.他打出兩支500轟.

Who’s on first?

“There’s a difference between how things are recorded statistically and how
they’re recorded chronologically,” said Steve Hirdt, Elias’s executive
vice president. “It’s different how baseball chooses to view it and how
others might.”

Suspended games in the modern major leagues take place only a few times a
season at most. But they have played statistical gymnastics with a milestone
of another player in the news these days.

The first hit of Barry Bonds’s nothing-is-ever-simple career technically
came after he had stroked several dozen others.

Bonds, then a 21-year-old rookie for the Pittsburgh Pirates, was called up
from the minor leagues in May 1986 and played his first game May 30, going 0
for 5. He stuck with the team for the rest of the summer, though, and on Aug.
11 played in the resumption of a game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field that
was suspended April 20.

Bonds pinch-hit in the 17th inning and singled in the deciding run in the
Pirates’ 10-8 victory.

It was retroactively recorded as having happened on April 20, when he was
actually playing for the Hawaii Islanders of the Class AAA Pacific Coast
League and before any of his 50 hits (including 10 home runs) to that point.

Will Rodriguez celebrate with a trip to baseball-statistic Bizarro World?
Will he go deep in ways few people ever considered?

I don’t know.
