KANSAS CITY - The Yankees' winning streak was snapped at six games last
night, but one positive that came from the game was the debut of backup
catcher Jose Molina.

Molina doubled off Jorge De La Rosa in the third inning, his first at-bat
since being traded to the Yankees last Saturday. The 32-year-old singled in
the fifth, but his 6-4-3 double play in the sixth killed a rally that could
have brought the Yankees back into the game.

"It's okay that I got a couple of hits, but I don't feel happy because we
lost the game," Molina said. "They've seen me a lot. They know what I can do."

Molina also showed his fielding prowess in the third, making a nice catch
against the screen on a Alex Gordon popup for the second out. Molina then
nailed Emil Brown trying to steal second, ending the frame.

"He knows what he's doing, both offensively and defensively," Joe Torre said.
"He had a good game, but unfortunately, we didn't go along with him."

Wil Nieves, Molina's predecessor, had just 10 hits in 61 at-bats this season,
collecting two hits in a game just twice in 26 games. Nieves was outrighted
yesterday, accepting a minor-league assignment to Triple-A Scranton, where he
will report today.

ahead, but Ray won't be pitching when the game starts, as he was placed on
the disabled list this week.

Mike Myers is the current pitcher for the Yankees, with Chien-Ming Wang and
Luis Vizcaino already having pitched. Torre wouldn't say whether Myers would
pitch the bottom of the eighth, choosing to wait until the end of last
night's game to see the state of the bullpen - Brian Bruney (three pitches)
and Sean Henn (48) were the only relievers used.

ON THE ROAD: Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens left the Yanks before last
night's game, traveling together to Baltimore. Pettitte will start tonight's
regularly scheduled game, while Clemens takes the ball tomorrow. "They're
connected at the hip," joked Torre.... The Cubs have joined the list of teams
interested in dealing for Tampa Bay's Ty Wigginton, according to a source.
The Yankees are interested in the infielder, along with the Red Sox, Dodgers
and Twins.
