Aching Knee Keeps Jeter Out of the Lineup

膝蓋疼痛讓Jeter無法先發

DETROIT, Aug. 26 — Derek Jeter never volunteers much about injuries. For
Manager Joe Torre to determine the severity of a problem, he gauges Jeter’s
reaction when he offers him a day off.

Jeter hurt his right knee coming out of the batter’s box Tuesday in Anaheim
and has not felt right since. Torre kept Jeter out of Sunday’s game here,
and Jeter did not protest.

“You learn over the years not to fight too much,” Jeter said. “I want to
play, that goes without saying, but at times, off days can help.”

Jeter, who had missed only two games before Sunday, is 1 for 13 in his last
three games. Torre said he noticed a difference in Jeter at the plate.

“It’s obvious, when you compare it to what you’re used to seeing from him,

Jeter said he would play Monday, and while Torre did not sign off on that, he
said Jeter could talk his way into the lineup.

FARNSWORTH FINDING FORM Kyle Farnsworth worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning Sunday,
striking out two. In his last seven innings, Farnsworth has allowed one hit
and no runs, with two walks and eight strikeouts.

expand Saturday. But Torre added that Ian Kennedy, the No. 1 draft pick from
2006, who has climbed three minor league levels, was unlikely to join the
team because he was not on the 40-man roster.

Tuesday’s start in Anaheim was the second time in Mussina’s career he
walked the first two hitters he faced. The last time was for Baltimore on
July 16, 1993, when he walked Shane Mack and Chuck Knoblauch of Minnesota.

Other matchups in the series include Roger Clemens (5-5) against Josh Beckett
(16-5) on Wednesday and Chien-Ming Wang (15-6) versus Curt Schilling (8-5) on
