Yankees Escape a Shaky Ninth, Making Jeter’s Homer Hold Up

BOSTON, Sept. 16 — There are two other teams that will make the American
League playoffs, because that is what the rules say. But on nights like this,
the Yankees and the Boston Red Sox seem to be only bodies in the baseball
universe. Everything revolves around them.

In their final meeting of the regular season — but not, perhaps, of 2007 —
 the Yankees nipped the Red Sox, 4-3, getting two home runs off Curt
Schilling and a strong return by Roger Clemens. Robinson Cano hit the first
home run and Derek Jeter the second — a two-out, three-run blast in the
eighth inning over the Green Monster that will rattle around New England
brains until the Yankees’ season is over.

The Red Sox lead the Yankees by four and a half games in the American League
East, and with 12 games remaining for them, they will probably win the
division. But the Yankees held their two-and-a-half-game edge over Detroit in
the wild-card race.

They could again lurk as a championship series opponent for the Red Sox, who
have the best record in the majors but a fan base preoccupied with all things
Yankees. That includes Jeter and Clemens, who have long been despised here,
and Joba Chamberlain, who showed off a curveball while working two innings,
earning the victory but giving up his first earned run on a homer by Mike
Lowell.

Clemens allowed two hits and an unearned run over six innings, striking out
four with three walks and showing no lingering effects of the elbow injury
that forced him from his last start. Schilling gave up six hits and four runs
in seven and two-thirds innings.

With a 2-2 count, Rivera jammed Ortiz with a cutter, and the best he could do
was pop it into shallow center. Jeter — who else — ranged out there to
corral it, pumping his fist after ending the game.

Clemens was making his 200th career start at Fenway Park, facing the team for
whom he earned his first 192 victories. Back here for the first time since
the 2003 playoffs, he was roundly booed during introductions.

Johnny Damon seemed to lose Ellsbury’s leadoff fly ball in the lights,
dropping it for an error. After a stolen base, a fly out and a borderline
ball four to Ortiz, Lowell singled to left to score Ellsbury.

With two out, first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz saved two runs with a diving
stab of a hard ground ball down the line by Jason Varitek. Mientkiewicz,
making his first start since breaking his wrist here on June 2, scrambled to
first and dove to slap the base with his glove.

Explaining his use of Mientkiewicz before the game, Manager Joe Torre
mentioned match-up statistics and Jason Giambi’s sore right elbow. Then he
added the reason that seemed most plausible, considering Giambi’s rough
weekend in the field: “We wanted to control the game as best we can,” Torre
said.

Mientkiewicz rewarded Clemens again in the fifth, when he snagged a hard
bouncer by Ellsbury and fired an overhand strike to Clemens, who caught it
and slid feet-first to beat the speedy rookie to the bag.

The Yankees did not score until the first batter of the fifth, Cano, drove a
Schilling fastball over the Green Monster in left center. It was the same
spot where Cano took Schilling deep twice on Aug. 30 at Yankee Stadium for
the only runs Schilling allowed in seven innings.

洋基一直都沒攻下分數，直到第五局時，小Q尻一支左中外野的全壘打，
聽說小Q專打席林姐，8/30在洋基球場時就欺負過他老人家 (哭哭)

With one out in the seventh, Clemens walked Ortiz and gave up a single to
Lowell. By then, the fans were chanting his first name in the sing-song style
they created for Darryl Strawberry in 1986.

第七局，火箭人在一人出局時保送了黑鐵厝，然後被賣肉人打一支安打，
那時球迷用唱歌的方式(在1986年替Darryl Strawberry創造出來的)來唱衰他的名字

Clemens was unfazed. After a fielder’s choice ground out, he finished his
night when Damon made a sliding catch of Varitek’s sinking liner.

Clemens threw 87 pitches through six; Schilling had just 69 through seven. He
set down the next 10 hitters after Cano’s home run, until Mientkiewicz
looped a single to left with one out in the eighth.

The Class AA Trenton Thunder won its first Eastern League championship on
Saturday in Akron with a 10-5 victory in Game 4 of its best-of-five series.
The Thunder will send five pitchers to the Yankees, with two — Tyler
Clippard and Chase Wright — joining the active roster.
