[新聞] Giambi tries again after Friday's flop at first

The Yankees' come-from-behind 8-7 win Friday night helped take away
the sting of a disastrous game at first base for Jason Giambi.
Manager Joe Torre attempted to push it further in the past by
starting Giambi at first again yesterday.

"Bigger sampling as opposed to a smaller sampling," Torre explained.
"Last night was ugly, but he wasn't the only one. It wasn't pretty
for the first four hours."

Giambi was charged with an error when he let J.D. Drew's grounder
go through his legs in the third, allowing a run to score. He also
botched a short-hop throw from Derek Jeter in the first, hesitated
on a pickoff attempt in the fourth that allowed Jacoby Ellsbury to
reach second safely, and then muffed a throw from Bobby Abreu that
would have doubled David Ortiz off first base for the third out of
the sixth.

Giambi helped make up for his gaffes by kick-starting the Yankees
six-run eighth with a solo home run, but was still berating himself
for the mistakes.

但是還是要嚴厲的看待這些失誤

"I'm playing a great first base," Giambi said after Friday's game,
"and definitely since I've come back (from the DL) that's something
I've taken a lot of pride in, going out there and playing well.
But the biggest thing is that (the mistakes) help to push me, and
get more focused."

在禮拜五的比賽後,GIAMBI說"今天我在一壘表現得很好"

He did not commit an error yesterday.

Giambi's .385 career average against Red Sox starter Josh Beckett
also helped him get the start yesterday (when he went 0-for-2 and
was hit by a pitch). And Torre was encouraged that Giambi's struggles
were not because of the injuries that have nagged him throughout his
career.

"Last night he just wasn't very good," Torre said, "but it had nothing

Giambi had a rough start yesterday, bobbling a grounder to him in the
first inning, but recovered in time to throw to Chien-Ming Wang covering
for the inning-ending out.

Johnny Damon knows the Fenway Park outfield better than most players,
thanks to his four years here as center fielder for the Red Sox.

But it has been a long time since he has had to patrol left field and
its daunting Green Monster -- before yesterday, he had only started
in left field at Fenway five times in his career. All came while with
the Kansas City Royals, the most recent on June 2, 2000.

但是DAMON已經很久沒有守左外野且面對恐怖的綠色怪物

他生涯只有5次在FENWAY PARK守過左外野,上一次是2000.6.2

"Just hopefully make the plays when they come, that's it," Damon said.
"This whole place is tough to play the outfield here. You've got a
lot of hard balls out there, and the wind can definitely be tough."

The rotation against Baltimore will be Phil Hughes tomorrow, Mike
Mussina Tuesday, and Andy Pettitte Wednesday. The first two games
against Toronto on Friday and Saturday will likely be Chien-Ming
Wang and then Ian Kennedy.

Though Kennedy last pitched last Thursday, Torre said he wanted to
give the 22-year-old more time off to keep his innings total low,
as the rookie is in his first full season of professional ball.

Derek Jeter's first-inning home run yesterday was the 193rd of his
career, moving him past Tino Martinez into sole possession of 13th
place on the Yankees all-time list. ... Bronson Sardinha made his
major league debut when he entered the game in right field in the
eighth. He grounded into a double play to end the game.

It was almost ignored in the thrill of the Yankees comeback win,
but the Yankee coaching staff didn't forget Melky Cabrera's foot-
first slide into first base in the fourth inning of Friday's game.

好像大家都忘了前天逆轉紅襪的那種興奮的感覺

不過洋基的教練可沒忘了CABRERA的滑一壘動作

The 23-year-old has a bad habit of sliding into first base, despite
repeated admonishments -- two of which came from Torre last night,
both during and after the game.

雖然一直重複勸告他不能滑一壘,但是他還是改不掉這個換習慣

老托昨天就勸了他兩次,一次在比賽時,一次在比賽後

"I may have to do it again before long, I hope not," Torre sighed.
"That was unusual, he's usually a headfirst slider -- maybe he didn't
think we meant feet-first."

"我不希望這樣一直提醒他"老托說

"他常常都是用頭去滑壘...那並不尋常...也許他不明白我們所說的FEET-FIRST"

推 kaky:樓上說法怪怪的吧..一壘前還是可以刺殺.不滑壘是因為可以衝過
推 Minamii:我總覺得現在大家傳球給大吉都特別小心..遇到田徑隊不知道
→ kaky:滑壘反而速度比較慢二三壘就算處於封殺下跑過頭是會被刺殺的
→ Minamii:會不會差這一點速度就來不及
