As Yankees Look to Cash in Now, Stars Await in 2008

TORONTO, Sept. 12 — No matter how their season ends, the Yankees will have
little time to savor victory or dwell on defeat. They have major personnel
decisions to make in the immediate aftermath of the season.

Actually, they have already decided on the basics: They would like to re-sign
the potential free agents Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera and Alex Rodriguez,
and they almost certainly will pick up their $16 million option on right
fielder Bobby Abreu.

The Yankees could have cleared some items off their agenda last winter, but
they chose not to negotiate with Rivera and Posada, who would probably have
been willing to talk. Both have had strong seasons, especially Posada, who
could enter the off-season as the first catcher over age 35 to hit .330 with
at least 20 homers and 85 runs batted in.

It seemed reasonable for the Yankees to wait on Rivera, who turns 38 in

“It varies from year to year,” Cashman said. “This is my 10th year as

set philosophy.”

Catchers do not typically stay productive as long as Posada has. But he did

“I don’t think you can predict anything; it’s just so hard,” said Joe
Girardi, the YES broadcaster and a former catcher. “Obviously, he keeps

Coming into Wednesday’s game, Posada was hitting .362 since the All-Star
Game break, compared with .325 before it. Manager Joe Torre said the addition
of a veteran backup, José Molina, explains part of Posada’s success.
Girardi said Posada had maintained one skill that should not be affected by
wear and tear: his plate discipline.

AN EXPANDED CLUBHOUSE As of a few days ago, the Yankees were planning to
design their clubhouse at the new Yankee Stadium with room for 36 locker
stalls. Then Rob Cucuzza, the clubhouse manager, called Brian Cashman and
pointed out that by the end of this month, the Yankees will have more players
than that on their active roster. So the plans were changed, and now the new
clubhouse will have room for 40.

Finding a locker for all the players is a suddenly challenge for Cucuzza. The
Yankees have 35 active players, and they will add pitchers Tyler Clippard and
Chase Wright when the Class AA playoffs end. The only others on the 40-man
roster are reliever T. J. Beam, first baseman Juan Miranda and the injured
starter Andrew Brackman.

Cashman sounded especially excited at the progress of shortstop Alberto Gonzá
lez, who was acquired from Arizona in the Randy Johnson trade last season.

“Most people believe that, especially if he hits, he can be an everyday
player in the big leagues,” Cashman said of González. “He’s already above

GOOD NEWS ON DUNCAN Shelley Duncan is expected to rejoin the Yankees on
Thursday after being examined in New York, where a bone bruise of the left
pelvis and a small hernia were diagnosed.

“That was the best news we could possibly get for him,” Joe Torre said. “I
know he was concerned when he left here last night.”

KARSTENS TO OLYMPIC TEAM Starter Jeff Karstens will report to Arizona in
October to train with the United States Olympic team. Karstens, who missed
most of this season after breaking his leg in April, needs to build up his
innings and expects to pitch for the team in an international tournament in
Taiwan this fall.

Karstens會在10月加入美國奧運代表隊在亞歷桑那的訓練.
