Notes: Knee pain keeps Jeter out
Yankees shortstop expected to return in Toronto on Tuesday

KANSAS CITY -- Derek Jeter wants to play. However, manager Joe Torre opted to
rest Jeter on Sunday after Jeter left Saturday's game with irritation of the
patella tendon in his right knee.

Jeter was out of the staring lineup on Sunday, but he should be ready for the
opener of a three-game series that starts on Tuesday in Toronto. Jeter asked
to play on Sunday, but Torre wanted to hold him out for a precautionary
measures.

"It's not an issue," Jeter said. "I don't know what he is going to do, but I
am not concerned about it. I want to play every day, period. I don't like
sitting out. That's the bottom line, whether it is at the beginning of the
season or now. I just don't like sitting out. I understand it, but I don't
like it."

"It is good that he is feeling better," Torre said. "We will sit him today,
and then we will see what happens on Tuesday."

Jeter has been bothered by knee issues for most of the season. On Aug. 26, he
missed a game against the Tigers because of a bruise above his right kneecap.
On Saturday, Torre removed Jeter in the fifth inning.

"He didn't like the way I was moving," Jeter said. "I told him that I could
stay in, but he has the final say."

The Yankees will play on the Rogers Centre turf in their upcoming series with
the Blue Jays. Torre may use Jeter as the designated hitter to rest the
captain's knee, but Jeter would perfer to play the field.

"I can play today, I can play yesterday," Jeter said. "I don't know what
Torre is going to do or what his thoughts are. I just know why today I wasn't
playing."

about that [right now]," Torre said. "He is either going to DH or play."

Jeter has played in 139 games this season, two off the team lead, and he is
batting .318 with nine homers, 62 RBIs and 89 runs scored.

Clemens update: Torre said that Roger Clemens was supposed to throw a side
session in Texas on Saturday. As of Sunday morning, Torre had not received
word from the Rocket about the session. Torre even sent Clemens an e-mail
requesting information, but hadn't received a reply.

Clemens, who received a cortisone shot in his right elbow, is scheduled to
pitch next Sunday against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. He is 6-6 with a 4.45
ERA in 17 games (16 starts) this season.

"I haven't heard back," Torre said. "[I asked] just basically how we are
doing and knowing that his plan was to throw a bullpen [session on Saturday].
I have not heard. I hope that is a good sign, but I can't be sure."

Matusi struggling: Hideki Matsui entered Sunday in a 4-for-38 (.105) slump.
His .292 average is his lowest since Aug. 10, while his .493 slugging
percentage is his lowest since July 21.

Matsui hasn't homered since Aug. 8 and hasn't notched a multi-hit game since
Aug. 29. Torre said that Matsui is not injured. Rather, the problem is
mechanical.

"I just think he is pulling off again," Torre said. "That is the one
consistent problem that he is going to be having from time to time, is he is
going to be thinking about pulling the ball maybe too much. In batting
practice, he worked on it yesterday and hit the ball to left-center a lot.
It's just a matter of being able to do that in a game, because I think that
opens everything up for him."

September callups report: Several callups, including left-hander Kei Igawa,
reported to the Yankees' clubhouse on Sunday afternoon. Torre said the team
should have Jeff Karstens, Matt DeSalvo, Sean Henn, Ross Ohlendorf and
Bronson Sardinha by Tuesday.

"We had a lot of help early, and the organization's feeling is that they want
to tip their hat to these guys and say, 'Thank you for being there,'" Torre
said. "They have all done well at one time or another, but we are not going
to be using these guys on a regular basis."

pitching staff," he added.

Torre said that Karstens could be a candidate for a long-relief role.
Ohlendorf, who went 4-4 with a 4.81 ERA at two Minor League levels, presents
an "intriguing" option for Torre as a pitcher who may be able to contribute
in relief. Ohlendorf was added to the 40-man roster on Sunday when Andy
Phillips (fractured right wrist) was placed on the 60-day disabled list.
