On the Day After, a Subdued Scene at Yankee Stadium

重點: 輸掉ALDS一天後洋基球場的景像

1. 當Tyler Kepner在10月9日凌晨1:30分離開洋基球場時, 球場的大螢幕是一遍空白的。
   但當他8個小時後一早來到洋基球場時有人在上頭打上了最後一段文字寫著: "謝謝你
   們，各位球迷!"

2. 對球迷而言這絕對是另一個令人興奮的球季，但卻再一次無法達成最終的目標－世界
   大賽冠軍。而10月9日的今天球場裡也環繞一種終結的氣氛中。Joe Torre不在球場裡，
   似乎他將再也不會坐在他的辦公室裡了。

3. 當Andy Phillips在打包他的東西，離他飛回阿拉巴馬的Tuscaloosa的家中還有16小時
   前被媒體問到(他對Torre離開想法)時，他說: "現在我拒絕這麼去想。我不想讓這種
   想法進到我的心中。" (想起季中要拉Andy Phillips上來前，Torre曾說現在他沒法給
   Phillips足夠的打數，但可以時一定會讓他上來，唉...Torre在賞識球員這點上，的
   確令球員感動。)

4. 對印地安人輸了兩場毀了洋基這個系列賽希望的王建民也支持Torre，他說: "我認為
   Joe總教練的工作作得很好，能夠在落後14場勝差時扭轉逆境而且打進季後賽。" 王建
   民也承認他投得不好，他說他可能會一直想他輸了球賽的事情，這會持續個"一個月到
   兩個月"。他說打者已經設定好放過他投出低角度好的伸卡球，讓他必須把球投到好球
   帶上方的位置。他說: "我必須練好滑球和變速球，讓這兩個球路更有威力。"

5. 球場裡沒有其他的球星在。Mike Mussina一如往常地球賽一結束就立刻打包好了，他
   的置物櫃前只有一個盒子標示著"Tampa"，沒有太多其他的東西。每個球員的置物櫃前
   都有一張DVD記錄著他個人這球季精采表現的影片。球員休息室的服務人員則花時間
   打包A-Rod的東西。

6. 打擊教練Kevin Long，和A-Rod有著深厚的友誼，他暗示著他預料A-Rod會留下來，即
   使A-Rod有跳脫出合約的權力，他表示: "看看他在這裡達成的歷史紀錄，以及他成為
   洋基球員所發生的一切，這些都會讓他在決定去留時納入考量。每場比賽有56,000名
   觀眾，激勵著你去打好比賽。他在這裡已經建立了很多良好的友誼關係，再重新開始
   對他而言會比較棘手。"

7. 不管A-Rod在還是不在，而且洋基可能沒有Torre了, 現在所有洋基的球員都必須重新
   開始面對未來挑戰了。

When I left Yankee Stadium around 1:30 a.m. today, the marquee on top was
blank. When I pulled in this morning, eight hours later, there was a man
hanging the last letter on the new message: THANK YOU FANS.

It was another exciting season for the fans, to be sure, but it was
ultimately unfulfilling, again. And there’s a sense of finality hanging over
the ballpark today. Joe Torre is not here, and it seems unlikely he will
occupy his office any longer.

“I refuse to think that way right now,” said Andy Phillips, who stopped by
to gather his things before a 16-hour drive home to Tuscaloosa, Ala. “I won’
t let that thought enter into my mind.”

Chien-Ming Wang, whose two losses to Cleveland doomed the Yankees in this
series, also supported Torre.

“I think Joe did a good job, to be back 14 games and get to the playoffs,”
 Wang said.

Wang acknowledged that he pitched badly, and said he would probably think
about his losses for “maybe one month, two months.” He said hitters have
learned to lay off his good sinker, forcing him to bring the pitch up in the
strike zone.

“I’ve got to work in my slider and changeup,” he said, “and get better.”

There are no other stars here. Mike Mussina, as usual, packed up immediately
after the final game. There’s a box marked “Tampa” in his locker, and not
much else. Each player has a DVD of his personal season highlights in his
locker. A clubhouse attendant has spent hours packing up A-Rod’s stuff.

Kevin Long, the hitting coach, is friends with Alex Rodriguez and hinted that
he expected him to stay, even though Rodriguez has that opt-out clause in his
contract.

“Look at the history here and everything about being a New York Yankee,”
 Long said. “That would have to factor into what he does. There are 56,000
people at every game; that motivates you to play. He’s built a lot of good
relationships in here. It’d be tough for him to start over again.”

With or without Rodriguez, and probably without Torre , all of the Yankees
must start over now.
