NO WORD ON TORRE
BUT MOVES MAY BE QUICK
By GEORGE KING
FLORIDA VACATION: Yankees brass will meet Tuesday in Tampa to decide the
fates of Joe Torre (pictured), as well as those of Alex Rodriguez, Mariano
Rivera, Jorge Posada, and Andy Pettitte, amongOctober 13, 2007 -- The most
aggressive organization in baseball is moving at the speed of sludge going
uphill. And don't expect the action in the Yankees' universe to pick up until
early next week, when George Steinbrenner gathers his inner circle in Tampa,
Fla., to decide if Joe Torre stays or goes.
However, when the meeting, scheduled for Tuesday at Legends Field, is over,
the Yankees could move at the speed of Joba Chamberlain's fastball.
"I think it could be that just about everything on the table now could be
decided by the end of next week," Hank Steinbrenner said outside Legends
Field early last night.
Everything?
Torre's situation could be sealed, but it's not likely the Yankees will know
any more about Alex Rodriguez, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte
than they do today. Rodriguez, the likely AL MVP, has until 10 days after the
World Series to opt out of the final three years of his contract and leave
$91 million on the table to become a free agent.
Posada and Rivera can file for free agency within 15 days of the final World
Series game, and Pettitte has a player's option for $16 million.
Hank Steinbrenner, asked yesterday about Torre's future, said, "We are going
to decide."
Club president Randy Levine said nothing has been decided going into the
meeting.
Last weekend, The Boss put Torre on notice that if the Yankees didn't defeat
the Indians in the ALDS it likely would be the end for his manager of 12
years. The Yankees' season ended with a Game 4 loss, and Torre's future
suffocated everything else.
By Tuesday, Torre appeared to have no chance of returning. Now, with no
announcement and George Steinbrenner moving further away from his edict,
Torre's chances of coming back for a 13th season have improved. To what
degree won't be known until the meeting is held.
Sons Hank and Hal Steinbrenner will be on hand, as will Levine, senior VP/GM
Brian Cashman, COO Lonn Trost, and VP/assistant GM Jean Afterman. Also
included only because he is Steinbrenner's son-in-law will be senior VP Felix
Lopez, whose knowledge of baseball can be fit into a thimble.
At this point it's a guess which way Hank and Hal will vote on Torre.
Asked how well he knew Torre, Hank said, "Not well. I have had conversations
with him about horse racing."
Though Torre's situation will be the main topic, it won't be the only one.
There will be opinions on what to do about Rodriguez, Posada and Rivera.
Whether Torre will be on hand is debatable. The word around Tampa the past
few days was that Torre will be asked to attend. A member of the New York
family said yesterday that's not likely.
If Torre is asked back to manage, will he have to take a pay cut from the $7
million he earned this past season when he was in the final year of a
three-year deal worth $19.2 million? If he returns, for how long?
Torre confidants say he wants to manage the club in 2009, when the new Yankee
Stadium opens.
