Makes his debut as Yankees Bench Coach in 2007 after serving for three years
as the Yankees Hitting Coach...Led Yankees hitters to a .285 team batting
average, 210 home runs and a Major-League-best 930 runs scored...Under his
direction in 2006, the Yankees lineup led all Major League teams in onbase
percentage (.363) and runs batted in (902) and ranked among the top three in
the Majors in batting average (.285), hits (1608), total bases (2607), walks
(649) and slugging percentage (.461)...Made his Major League coaching debut
in 2004, guiding Yankees hitters to an all-time franchise record 242 home
runs...Was a member of Joe Torre's coaching staff at the 2004 All-Star Game
in Houston on 7/13...Served seven seasons as a special instructor during
Yankees Spring Training in Tampa, Florida from 1997-2003.
Playing Career:
Was the premiere first baseman of his era, compiling a .307 career batting
average with 1,099 runs batted in...in a 14-year career from 1982 through
1995, collected 2,153 hits to rank fifth on the Yankees' all-time list...is a
nine-time Gold-Glove-Award winner and has the highest career fielding
percentage of any first-baseman in American League history (.9958)...won the
American-League batting championship in 1984when he batted .343 and was named
the League's Most Valuable Player in 1985...set the Yankee record for most
doubles in a season with 53 in 1986...in 1987, homered in eight consecutive
games from 7/8-18, tying the American League record, and set a Major-League
record by hitting six grand slams...on 5/15/90 vs. Minnesota, became just the
11th player to hit 100 home runs at Yankee Stadium...in his career, hit 131
home runs at Yankee Stadium, seventh most in Yankee history...in 1992,
collected 40 doubles marking his fourth 40-plus double season, third most in
Yankee history behind only Lou Gehirg (7) and Bob Meusel (5)...in 1992,
became just the sixth Yankee to play six seasons of at least 150 games...in
1993, set a team record for fielding percentage by a first baseman
(.998)...hit .304 with 6 HR and 51 RBI while winning his ninth Gold-Glove
Award in 1994...recorded his 1000th career RBI on 4/7/94 vs. Texas...recorded
his 2000th career hit on 7/23/94 at California...from 1985-1994 was fifth
among Major-League leaders with 1,733 hits and a .307 batting average and
fourth with 907 RBI...was selected by the Yankees in the 19th round of the

Married (Kim) and has three children: Taylor, Preston and Jordon...was named
the Yankees' 10th captain in history on 2/28/91...in 1993 received the Joan
