1) Torre could stay
The fact that Joe Torre still has a job is an indicator that he could be
re-signed – for a much lower price tag than the $7 million he made this
year. After all, managerial salary runner-up Lou Piniella only made $3.5
million. Steinbrenner has apparently been affected by the bleatings from the
herd of Yankee players who love Joe: Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter, Andy
Pettitte, Jorge Posada, and A-Rod among them. It seems the Yankees are either
about to make a sea change and lose a lot of this gang one year before they
move into a new stadium or hang on to this same old, same old bunch for a

2) A-Rod looking for 12 years, $360 mil
Scott Boras is already pulling out all the stops for his client, even though
A-Rod is still officially just the third baseman for the ALDS loser Yankees,
but Boras is going to go ahead and say that if Rodriguez decides to become a
free agent – and when have you doubted something less? – the 32-year-old
would be looking for a 12-year deal worth $30 million per. That would leave
at least one more A-Rod contract for Boras to negotiate, since the agent said
his client would be playing still when he was 45. (New York Post)

3) Clemens’ wife ready for him to retire
Roger Clemens has never been a big one for retiring and he still says he hasn
’t made up his mind for next year but his wife, Debbie, has given a pretty
good indicator of what she expects to happen:

"I think he's ready to do the barbecue and come home. He's been such a
workaholic and he's really put his heart and soul into baseball. But I just
think it's time." (New York Daily News)

4) Piniella would listen to Yanks
Piniella keeps saying Chicago is his last stop, a Yankee call would give him
pause. He’s under contract till the end of ’09 and the team has an option
for 2010, but if Steinbrenner gets his aging eyes focused in the direction of
longtime Yank favorite Piniella, things have a weird way of falling into
place for new York. (Chicago Tribune)

5) Leo Mazzone coming to Yanks?
Feisty Yanks bullpen coach Joe Kerrigan is apparently already asking around
baseball about other jobs and it’s possible that Baltimore pitching god Leo
Mazzone could bring his endless rock show to the Bronx. He’s got a year left
on his deal with the Orioles but Andy MacPhail’s appearance in Baltimore
front office and the disappearance of Mazzone’s buddy Sam Perlozzo as coach
may have shifted the earth there enough to let Mazzone hope on the Acela and

6) Lowell to Phillies? (But he likes Boston)
Boston's Mike Lowell, who is about to be a free agent, has apparently “
expressed interest” in the Phils, who have a big weakness at third. But his
first choice – at least right now – is to stay with Boston, unless the Red
Sox go after A-Rod, of course. And Philadelphia may look to fill the spot
with Colorado’s Garrett Atkins or Joe Crede of the White Sox in a trade. One
thing is clear: The team won’t be going after A-Rod. (Wilmington News
