Report: Yankees Near Deal With Mahay

The Yankees and relief pitcher Ron Mahay are closing in on a two year deal
worth about five to seven million dollars, according to one AL executive.
Mahay, 36, dominated lefties and holding them to a .189 average. He will give
the Yankees a lefty specialist in the bullpen who can set up for closer
Mariano Rivera. He also gives them an option if Rivera starts to struggle.
Mahay was 3-0 with a 2.55 ERA and 55 K and has been pretty consistent in
keeping his ERA down throughout his ten year career. Despite struggling with
the Cubs in 2002, he is 19-10 with a 3.87 ERA in 359 games. He has experience
in the American League playing his first two seasons with the Red Sox.
Although he is getting older, it only makes their pitching better by adding a
lefty specialist, who is even more confident than he was after putting up
solid numbers. If a deal is not reached in the next two days, expect it to be
shelved until next week because of the holiday's.

Yanks Front Runners for Lefty Ron Mahay

Buster Olney stated that the Yankees are the front runners to land lefty Ron
Mahay. I have talked to a couple of people who will confirm this rumor. If
the Yankees could get Mahay to put up anything close to the year he had in
2007 this would be a WELCOME addition to the Yanks pen.

Ron Mahay’s 2007 stats:

G: 58 IP: 67 H: 52 HR: 4 B: 37 SO: 55 ERA: 2.55 LBA: .189

* only problem I got with Mahay is of course the walks!

Let’s take a quick look at how the Yanks pen looks now:

* Assuming Mahay and the Viz signs!

CL - Mo Rivera
SU - Lu Vizcaino
RP - Ron Mahay
RP - Ross Ohlendorf
RP - Jose Veras
RP - Kyle Farnsworth -will be traded-
RP - Eddy Ramirez / Brian Bruney -could also be traded-

I would say that’s a decent pen at best -of course its only on paper-. The
Yanks need to add a very good RP to the pen by the end of the beginning of
spring.
