MLB looking into actions of A-Rod's cousin
Major League Baseball is investigating the relationship between Yankees third
baseman Alex Rodriguez and his cousin Yuri Sucart, who was linked two years ago
to Rodriguez's admitted steroid use, according to a report in the New York
Daily News on Thursday.
"We have been in contact with the Yankees about this matter," Rob Manfred,
MLB's executive vice president of labor relations and human resources, told
the Daily News on Wednesday. "We are looking into it," he said. The Yankees
have not commented.
Sucart was investigated in 2009, after Sports Illustrated reported that
Rodriguez had tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs during MLB's
survey testing while a member of the Rangers in 2003.
In the wake of SI's report, Rodriguez held a news conference in which he
described how Sucart would travel to the Dominican Republic to obtain
performance-enhancing drugs for both men from 2001-03.
In 2009, Yankees officials informed Rodriguez that Sucart would not be
permitted at any team gatherings, including team flights, buses and restricted
areas at ballparks.
Sucart reportedly was seen wearing a Yankees sweatshirt at the team's hotel in San Francisco after New York's 10-3 win over the A's on Tuesday.
Sucart, who is 13 years older than the 35-year-old Rodriguez, also reportedly accompanied Rodriguez on other road trips last season and earlier this season.
