Yankees slugging their way into summer

NEW YORK -- With 10 Yankees on the disabled list, manager Joe Girardi could
be forgiven if he felt the need to light a fire in his banged-up group of
remaining players.

But 65 games into the season, he does not see that as the case.

The Yankees enter Thursday's game against the Rangers with a 38-28 record, a
game-and-a-half behind division-rival Boston for the best record in the
American League. Only the Philadelphia Phillies have a better record than the
AL East rivals.

"I think if you saw your club playing like that, or you felt that your club
was feeling that, you would talk to them, but I haven't sensed that from our
club," Girardi said about whether he sees his club faltering with so many
guys hurt. "After we lose our leadoff hitter and our captain we go out and
score 12 runs against a very good pitching team. ... I haven't seen that
right now, but if it was to happen, you'd definitely talk to them."

The Yankees' captain, Derek Jeter, will be sidelined until at least June 29,
going on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday after suffering a Grade 1 strain in
his right calf Monday. The loss of Jeter puts his pursuit of 3,000 career
hits on hold, as the shortstop stands at 2,994 hits.

But it does give fans something to look forward to upon his return. And, in
the meantime, they can potentially see the future in Jeter's replacement,
Eduardo Nunez.

Nunez seemed unfazed by filling the captain's shoes, connecting for two hits
Tuesday before hitting a celebratory home run in the fourth inning Wednesday
that tied the game on his 24th birthday.

The long ball has been friendly to the Yankees, who have 103 home runs on the
season, by far the most in the Majors. On pace to hit just more than 251 home
runs this season, the Yankees would fall 13 short of the single-season record
of 264, set by the Seattle Mariners in 1997.

But they are not far off from another historic chase, one that would have
extra meaning 50 years since the summer of '61.

That, of course, was the season of the epic home run race between Yankees
teammates Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle, with Maris hitting his
single-season-record 61st homer in the 162nd and final game of the season.
Mantle finished with 54.

The Yankees have a pair of sluggers just behind the pace set by the M&M boys
in 1961, as Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira are tied with the Blue Jays'
Jose Bautista for the Major League lead with 21 homers.

Granderson hit his 21st home run of the season in Tuesday's win. Teixeira
drove Granderson home Wednesday with a blast to left-center for his 20th
dinger, from the right side. Five innings later, he hit one from the left
side, his 11th career game hitting home runs from both sides of the plate,
tying Eddie Murray and Chili Davis for the Major League record.

With Teixeira and Granderson, the Yankees now have two players with 20 or
more home runs through 66 games for just the third time in franchise history,
joining Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in 1927, and Mantle and Maris in '61.

The back-and-forth show has made for exciting theatre in the Bronx thus far,
even if Granderson does not think he should be mentioned in the same
discussion with traditional power sluggers Bautista and Teixeira.

"100," Granderson said when asked how many home runs it will take for him to
concede. "If I hit 100 in a season then I'll say I am [a home run hitter.]"

Granderson, who has never hit more than 30 home runs in a season, has been
remarkable against left-handed pitching, hitting nine homers and batting .278
against southpaws.

"Grandy has been special this year," Girardi said. "He has swung the bat
really well for us. Every hitter's going to go through those periods where
maybe they don't get as many hits for a couple, two or three days. But he's
been really, really consistent."
