October Ends Early, as Tigers Eliminate Yankees in Five

When the Yankees went into spring training in February, they took with them
their annual goal of winning the World Series, even if many outside the team
didn’t share that expectation. The Yankees had missed out on signing the
free-agent pitcher Cliff Lee, and they carried serious concerns about their
pitching rotation and the age of some of their core players.
年初春訓時即便外界都不看好, 但洋基還是再度設定WS總冠軍為今年目標
沒簽到小李飛刀, 先發投手群看來很抖, 還有幾個重點球員年紀過大的疑慮

As the season progressed and many of the questions were answered, the Yankees
ended up with the best record in the American League, stoking the hopes of
fans that a 28th World Series championship was in the offing.

But with shocking finality, the Yankees were drummed out of the postseason in
the first round Thursday, losing to the Detroit Tigers, 3-2, in Game 5 of

hitters got 10 hits, but left 11 runners on base.

For the Yankees, who have made October baseball almost a rite, the early exit
is a bitter conclusion. They easily won their division and constructed the
second-best record in baseball, but never established themselves as the class
of the American League. And so their season ends just a week into their
favorite month.

In the final game, Manager Joe Girardi was faced with something approaching a
pitching crisis when his starter, Ivan Nova, faltered by surrendering
back-to-back home runs in the first inning to Don Kelly and Delmon Young.
Nova, the 24-year-old rookie who hadn’t lost a start since June 13, left the
game after the second inning with tightness in his right forearm.

That left Girardi trying to stitch together the final 21 outs by using an
unusual assortment of relief pitchers beginning in the third inning with Phil
Hughes.

Hughes was followed by Boone Logan and then C. C. Sabathia, who entered the
game in the fifth inning for the first relief appearance of his professional
career. But Sabathia, who pitched three days earlier in Game 3, gave up a
leadoff broken-bat double to Austin Jackson. He struck out the next two
batters, then walked Miguel Cabrera intentionally with first base open. But
Victor Martinez followed with a single to center, scoring Jackson to extend
the Tigers lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Robinson Cano hit a solo home run off Tigers
starter Doug Fister that landed in the second deck that narrowed the deficit
to 3-1. Otherwise, the Yankees were unable to touch Fister, whom they had
roughed up after Game 1 of the series resumed on Saturday. This time around
Fister gave up just one run on five hits over his five innings of work.

The Yankees loaded the bases in the fourth after Alex Rodriguez walked and
Nick Swisher and Jorge Posada each singled. But Fister got both Russell
Martin and Brett Gardner to pop up to escape the danger. The Yankees also had
an opportunity to take the lead in the seventh when they loaded the bases
with one out. They scored a run when Mark Teixeira walked, but that play was
sandwiched by strikeouts to Alex Rodriguez and Nick Swisher. Derek Jeter’s
bid for a two-run homer in the eighth fell just short. Alex Rodriguez struck
out in the ninth for the Yankees’ final out of the season.

The game may have been the final sendoff for Jorge Posada, who went 2 for 4.
Playing in his 17th season, during which he contributed to five World Series
championships, the 40-year-old former catcher has been slowly phased out over
the past two seasons.
波神今年可能是最後一次出賽了, 今4支2亮麗表現~
40歲, 打了17季的洋基人, 五次世界冠軍賽~

But Posada surprised the Yankees with a small resurgence at the end of the
season. In early August he was relegated to the bench and it seemed he would
not even make the postseason roster. But by the end of the regular season he
was demonstrating his power and acumen at the plate to the point that he was
not only on the roster, he started every game as the designated hitter.

Another player who may have thrown his last pitch as a Yankee is Sabathia,
the ace of the staff. Sabathia has the right to opt out of his contract this
off-season and become a free agent. He has repeatedly expressed his love of
playing baseball for the Yankees, who in turn admire his tenacity, leadership
and willingness to do things like pitch on short rest and pitch in relief in
an emergency, as he did on Thursday.

The Yankees had hoped to pair Sabathia with Lee, his former teammate in
Cleveland, but Lee chose to sign with the Phillies instead. The Yankees made
do with Plan B veterans like Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon, who pitched far
beyond expectations, but no one can predict how they will pitch a year from
now.

但Lee選擇了舊愛費城人, 洋基只好用plan B改簽Garcia & Colon

Also performing above their previous standards was Curtis Granderson, who had
a season worthy of Most Valuable Player Award consideration. He helped extend
the Yankees’ season one more game by making two magnificent catches in Game
4 in Detroit.

The season was highlighted by the individual achievements of Mariano Rivera,
who became the all-time saves leader with 603, and Jeter, who reached the
milestone of 3,000 hits and recovered strongly from an early season slump.
Dave Robertson also emerged as an elite set-up man, giving the Yankees
perhaps the most formidable bullpen in baseball.

Girardi hoped he might be able to stabilize Thursday’s game, and the season,
by going to that bullpen early and sprinkling in some starting pitchers in
relief. The only problem was that his offense, so productive all year long,
could never overcome the deficit.
