Leyland wishes Tigers had faced Yankees' Nova before

A.J. Burnett may be a better mentor than pitcher.

Ivan Nova, who will start Game 2 of the ALDS for the Yankees, credited Burnett
with some of the success he's enjoyed in his first full season in the majors.

“He helped me with almost everything -- personal, in the game,” Nova said of
Burnett, who was pushed to the bullpen for the series against the Tigers.

“I remember he taught me that when I was having my bad moments last year and
this year in the beginning -- every time before I pitch, he always was telling
me, don’t give them a reason to take me out of the game. During the game, I
was thinking when I have a situation that could be trouble, that's what I was
thinking.”

Nova will make his first postseason start on Saturday night. After spending
most of July in the minor leagues, the 24-year-old emerged as the Yankees best
starter after CC Sabathia.

“His ability to pitch when he got in trouble this year, he did a much better
job than he did last year in managing innings,” manager Joe Girardi said. “
That’s important especially in these types of games. You can’t let one thing
go wrong and then lose everything.

“You're going to go through some adversity. If you play long enough in the
playoffs, you’re going to go through some adversity. I think the way he
handled it played an important role.”

The struggles of the other starters also made Girardi's decision easier.
Burnett was wildly inconsistent all season, Phil Hughes was dealing with back
spasms in September and Bartolo Colon, who did not make the ALDS roster,
slowed after a surprisingly quick start. Freddy Garcia has been steady most of
the year and will be the Game 3 starter Monday in Detroit.

“I think I was more aggressive,” Nova said of his improvement after returning
from the minors.

“I was getting ahead on everybody every time I can. It was a huge part of my
process after I came here. I was totally different from the beginning of the
season and then after I got sent down. I came here with another mindset, I
don't want to go back to the minor leagues.”

And now Nova is one of the most important pieces on the Yankees postseason
roster. He’s also a complete unknown to the Tigers, who have never faced the
righty before.

“We're a little concerned about that,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said of not
having faced Nova before.

“We don't know a whole lot, other than what we see on tape, what the scouts
say… But really the hitters will have to get a little better feel for that
when they get in the box. You can give guys reports. You never know how it's
going to play out.”

After starting the season 4-4, Nova has reeled off 12 straight wins and has not
lost since June 3.

“We know he's very good,” Leyland said. “I think he won 16 games, very
impressive… I wish we were a little more familiar with him, but we're not.
That's all part of it. We’ll just have to cross that bridge when we get
there.”

              我真希望我們對他了解多一點，可惜沒有，這就是我們有點擔心的地方。
              只能到時候“船到橋頭自然直”了。
