When Andy Pettitte held his wife's coat and pocketbook as she practiced the
National Anthem yesterday afternoon behind home plate, the former Yankees
star ace took a ribbing from some former teammates.
"What a difference a year makes," he joked back.
Indeed. Last year at this time, Pettitte was in the familiar position of
starting a Division Series Game 2. This year, though, he had been trying to
stay away from a public connection with the Yankees, rejecting the
organization's regular requests to be part of team functions such as
Old-Timers' Day.
But when his wife, Laura, agreed to sing the anthem before Game 2 of the
ALDS, Pettitte finally gave in and agreed to throw the first pitch.
Alas, there was no such ceremony last night because the Tigers and Yankees
had to pick up Game 1, which was suspended Friday night because of heavy
rains. Thus, the Pettittes' sing-and-fling will have to wait until tonight's
pre-Game 2 festivities, where the Yankees will look to take a 2-0 ALDS lead
after winning 9-3 last night.
There are tons of Yankees fans who wish Pettitte was doing something more
than throwing a single pitch. Pettitte, after all, has a record 42 postseason
starts and was a constant security blanket for the Yankees at this time of
year.
But Pettitte insisted he has few pangs to pitch. In fact, he was thrilled
about his first adult season without professional baseball. He spent a bunch
of time at his Texas ranch and took what he called "the summer vacation of my
life" to the Grand Tetons in Wyoming, where he shared a two-bedroom cabin
with his four kids and rode horses all day.
"I hate to say it, but not a whole lot," Pettitte said when asked if he
missed the game.
Pettitte said he received a few "goofy" texts from former teammates during
the season trying to recruit him back, but there was nothing serious. He
claimed he never had a moment of doubt that he did the right thing by
retiring. And as for un-retiring to play in 2012, Pettitte sounded content to
be a family man rather than push his body for 200 more innings.
"I feel the desire [to play] is gone," Pettitte said. "I am retired. I would
never say never, but God would literally have to give me desire again. . . .
I'm really doing good. I just had a good peace about [retiring]."
