[新聞] Rafael Soriano Not Fitting In with the Yankees

Now that he's been in camp for a couple of weeks, the first impression of
him doesn't seem to be a positive one. Joel Sherman of the NY Post was
recently asked about how Soriano has fit into camp and here is how Sherman
replied:

He's not fitting in. Haven't seen him talk to another player. More than
shy, seems distrustful.

This is not a good sign at all. It is worrisome to hear this mostly because
the Yankees have put forth a strong effort in recent years and it seems to
have paid off. Adding a player who is openly resentful can be hazardous to an
otherwise harmonious clubhouse.

It should be said though that Soriano probably couldn’t have received a
worse welcome than the one Brian Cashman gave him. Cashman blasted the
signing standing a mere five feet away from Soriano and called the signing
one that was shoved down his throat. There probably has never been another
player who received a worse welcome, even Billy Martin smiled when the
Yankees signed Reggie Jackson.

Still though, Cashman is not a player on the field. Soriano should be at
least making a sincere effort to get along with teammates. Mariano Rivera
made it clear early on that even if Cashman didn’t want Soriano, Mo himself
did. If a veteran player who is respected like Mo is reaches out to you and
tries to take you under his wing, you should return the effort.

This has the feeling that it was a bad signing that could potentially get
even worse if his attitude goes from distrustful to downright surly. Still,
at least for now we should give Soriano the benefit of the doubt. It’s hard
to transition to new teams and Cashman made it a lot harder too. So maybe
this will be something where over time Soriano will begin to warm up and
possibly even become a very good teammate. Only time will tell.
