NEW YORK -- Ryne Duren, a hard-throwing right-hander in the 1950s and '60s who was known for his thick glasses and wildness on the mound, passed away on Thursday. He was 81. Duren pitched for seven Major League teams during a 10-year career that stretched from 1954-65, with most of his appearances coming with the Yankees. A product of Cazenovia, Wisc., Duren passed away at his winter home in Lake Wales, Fla. His death was first reported by the Wisconsin State Journal. "Ryne could throw the heck out of the ball," said Yankees legend Yogi Berra, Duren's catcher from 1958-61. "He threw fear in some hitters. I remember he had several pair of glasses but it didn't seem like he saw good in any of them. He added a lot of life to theYankees and it was sad his drinking shortened his career. I'm sorry to learn of his passing." A three-time American League All-Star during his playing days, Duren pitched in New York for four seasons beginning in 1958, acquired in the trade that sent Billy Martin to the Athletics. Duren was effective as a Yankee, recording a league-leading 20 saves in 1958 and posting a 1.88 ERA in 41 appearances in '59, the best mark of his career. He pitched in five World Series games, finishing four, and earned a victory with 4 2/3 innings of work in Game 6 of the 1958 Fall Classic to defeat Hall of Famer Warren Spahn and the Milwaukee Braves. "I had the ball in the fifth inning and was still there in the 10th," Duren told Baseball Digest in 2004. "If you're talking about the game's importance, that '58 Series was certainly the highlight of my career." In the July 1959 All-Star Game, Duren hurled three scoreless innings for the AL squad, allowing just one hit -- a single to Hank Aaron. That day, Willie Mays and Eddie Mathews were among Duren's four strikeout victims. Duren also saw time with the Orioles (1954), Athletics ('57), Angels ('61), Phillies (1963-64, '65), Reds ('64) and Senators ('65). He compiled a record of 27-44 with a 3.83 ERA in 311 games (32 starts), finishing 145 of those contests and credited with 57 saves. Recognizable for his thick Coke-bottle corrective lenses, Duren's antics entering games were unique. Possessing a blazing fastball, Duren liked to try to intimidate opposing batters by throwing his first warmup pitches well over the catcher's head, though it happened by accident the first time. "When I released that ball and it went way over the catcher's head, and hit that screen hard, fans got such a kick out of it," Duren told Baseball Digest. "Then the coaches, the press and everybody thought it was such a great thing and encouraged me to do it afterwards." Following his playing career, Duren battled alcoholism and wrote a 2003 book, "I Can See Clearly Now," detailing his fight against addiction and his efforts to help educate others. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110107&content_id=16407444&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb R.I.P. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 112.105.66.58
