Yankees GM Brian Cashman, on 1050 ESPN Radio's The Michael Kay Show this
afternoon, tried to dispel recent speculation that he might want to mosey
along when his contract runs out after this season. "We won the World Series
in 09, we won 95 games this year, our farm system was just rated the fifth
best in baseball . . . why would I want to jump ship and run somewhere else
where maybe the opportunites are a lot more difficult? Everything's good
here. The only problem is I need a starting pitcher.''
A little later in the interview, however, Cashman seemed to hedge his bets:
"I like what I do. I think I've gotten maybe better over time. I understand
the job better, and the people and the processes better. . . But at the same
time if at any point I become a problem where the job’s not getting done to
the best of its ability, if I lost out and they wanted to take me out we have
people who could step up and replace me. I’m proud of being a part of it. At
the same time, I’ll be proud to watch it from a distance if somebody decided
it’s itme for me not to be here. I’m happy and loking forward to being here
for as long as it works. But if it doesn’t work, I'm also not afraid. I’m a
big boy. (But) at this stage, I’m all in, no doubt about it.''
And later still: "It does bother me that we’re kind of in a no-win situation
to some degree. When we do win, it's because of our money. That has given us
a certain distinct advantage, no doubt about it, but that doesn’t mean I
dream of being the next moneyball, that I want to be Billy Beane. I don’t
know where any of that stuff comes from. I’m not afraid of a small market
challenge. But is that what I want? No. I want to be part of something
special on a consistent yearly basis.I’m not embarrassed about writing a
check. I'm not embarrassed by what we spend. I’m not looking to jump ship to
a small market club. But I’m not afraid of the challenge of running a small
market club.''
Clearly, like Billy Martin on the attributes of a certain light beer, the GM
feels very strongly both ways.
