[閒聊] Bernie: Jeter skilled enough to play any position

NEW YORK -- Bernie Williams patrolled the outfield for 16 seasons in the Bronx,

a span during which he learned never to doubt Derek Jeter's abilities at

anything.



So while the quasi-retired Williams wouldn't rule out the idea of Jeter

eventually moving to center field -- as Yankees general manager Brian Cashman

said last week -- he also isn't necessarily holding his breath for it to happen.



"He's a very good athlete," Williams said on Saturday, hosting an event in N

ew Rochelle, N.Y., for Hillside Food Outreach. "I'm not in any way saying that

he's going to play center field, but I think he probably can play any position

that he can get his mind into -- probably not catcher. Probably anything else,

he'd be able to do."


Cashman created a stir in responding to a question at a fan event last week in

Times Square when he said that Jeter was more likely to move to center field

than third base if a position switch is required during his contract, which

spans through 2014.



The GM later clarified his remarks, stating that a Jeter position switch is not

an issue the Yankees are currently thinking about, but Williams said that Jeter

would be receptive if the topic ever needs to come up.



"I think that the kind of player that he is, he's probably going to do what's

best for the team, because that's the way he has been," Williams said. "As an

outsider looking in, he's always had this personality of being very

team-oriented."



Yankees designated hitter Jorge Posada, who also attended the event to help

distribute food in New York's Westchester and Putnam counties, said that he

cannot envision a scenario under which Jeter would switch positions.


"Derek's a shortstop and Derek is not going to move to another position,"

Posada said. "He hasn't even started playing this year and you're talking

about four years from now. You can't see the future."
