Inbox: How will A-Rod fare in '09?

I'm sure I won't be the only one asking this, but it needs to be addressed.
How will the reports of Alex Rodriguez using steroids from 2001-03 affect
his performance this season, as well as the team's?
-- Chris W., Binghamton, N.Y.
You certainly were not alone on this topic. I keep thinking about the first
days of camp in 2007, when Rodriguez had this burning desire to unload the
truth about how his friendship with Derek Jeter wasn't really as solid as
he'd been portraying it.
Rodriguez said in the ESPN interview that "the truth will set you free,"
and A-Rod turned his clearer conscience into a MVP season in 2007. If the
Yankees get the same in '09, they'll be a lot happier after dealing with
this three-ring circus stuff.
No matter what, A-Rod knew he was heading into Spring Training with something
to tackle. It seems like he always does. Maybe one positive is that Joe
Torre's book is no longer a hot-button issue -- no one seems to care all
that much about the "A-Fraud" nickname anymore.
Rodriguez is a lightning rod for controversy, and there is no doubt that
some years it has distracted him. Other times, like 2007, he's been able to
plug into his iPod and avoid the clatter. This issue will take the challenge
to a new level, and I'm not sure anyone can predict how it plays out.
Actually playing the games on the field has doubled as a refuge for players
before. Maybe it will again.
As for the team, the Yankees can point to Jason Giambi and Andy Pettitte as
blueprints to follow. There's no exact right combination, but I highly doubt
that players will take the field thinking about what A-Rod did in 2001, '02
and '03. Winning a championship remains the goal, and anything the Yankees
can do to get A-Rod performing at his top level would help that cause.
There was an article on MLB.com saying Bud Selig is now considering a
suspension for Rodriguez. I don't condone steroid use, but isn't that
completely unfair to A-Rod since there were 103 other names on that list?
-- Kevin D., Syracuse, N.Y.
The word "considering" is a wonderful one. For example, I'm sure that last
season, trades involving Kei Igawa were considered around the Majors, but
ultimately rejected.
(.....井川連在這裡都被拿出來俵....)
Basically, there's no reason to expect that A-Rod will be punished for
anything that transpired before Major League Baseball had penalties in place.
If it turns out that Rodriguez's Yankees seasons are not as clean as he says
they are, though, that might be a different scenario.
Would A-Rod have his Texas statistics officially scrubbed? This is his one
and only opportunity to go down in history as the greatest baseball player.
-- David M., Boise, Idaho
Put it to you this way -- Rodriguez fought to earn an additional $6 million
for each one of his 660th, 714th, 755th, 762nd and 763rd home runs. With that
kind of scratch on the line, there's no way he'd ask to take a step backward
in time.
Do you have any update on the health status of Humberto Sanchez and whether
or not we can expect to see him in the Bronx at some point this summer?
-- Scott V., Rochester, N.Y.
Ah, baseball. Sanchez pitched out in the Arizona Fall League and was a little
rusty, but ultimately came through it fine. He said he would head into camp
hoping for a role as one of the Yankees' relievers to open the season, but
more likely he will wind up opening at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. From
there, all avenues are open, depending on what happens in New York.
I haven't heard much on any final moves they might make involving Xavier Nady
or Nick Swisher. What is happening on the rumor front concerning any possible
deals for either of them?
-- Ryan J., Missoula, Mont.
Not much of anything. General manager Brian Cashman said the Yankees are
prepared to go into the spring with what they've got, and there's not much
motivation to move either one of those players right now unless someone
offers up something worth taking.
As it stands, the Yankees have two very capable corner outfielders in Nady
and Swisher, and since no one has a crystal ball to see what's ahead, why
deplete that in February? The outfield picture can change drastically with
just one badly placed fly ball.
It seems like Brett Gardner and Melky Cabrera will be competing for the
starting center-field job. Do you think that Cabrera's decision to play in
the World Baseball Classic will hurt his standing with the team since he will
miss a good portion of Spring Training?
-- Dan S., Manton, Mich.
Cabrera is on the provisional roster for the Dominican Republic, but that
does not necessarily mean he'll be attending. You bring up a good point in
that Cabrera may need to pass up a Classic opportunity to focus instead on
winning a job at the Major League level. He's due $1.4 million and is out of
options, so the Yankees may view Cabrera as expendable if he isn't starting.
Why is everyone is concerned with who will play center field? Swisher has
played center before, so why not put him in center, Nady in right, Johnny
Damon in left and have Hideki Matsui as the designated hitter?
-- John A., Jackson, N.J.
Seems simple when you put it that way, doesn't it? For whatever reason, the
Yankees' reports are that Swisher is a below-average defensive center fielder
and they would prefer not to play him there. With Cabrera and Gardner both on
board and better defensive options, they seem locked in to choose between
those two at this time.
I can't help but feel a little disappointed that the Yankees didn't pursue
Manny Ramirez. All they had to do is put Damon in center, Nady in right and
put Ramirez in left. They'd have three major hitters playing in the outfield.
-- Robert K., Keyport, N.J.
I guess you could always mail a letter to Cashman at Yankee Stadium, but he
says they made their choice in investing the money into Mark Teixeira.
Technically, New York could still go after Ramirez if it wanted to -- the
Bombers haven't hit their limit on Type A free agents, as previously reported
-- but as Cashman said, "I can't. I've got no glue."
