Inside the new clubhouse
The clubhouse inside the Stadium is really amazing.
For starters, you could play touch football in there, that’s how big it is.
Each locker is separated by a frosted glass partition and there’s a replica
of the frieze above lit by a blue neon light.
Each player has two electrical outlets, enough room to charge a cell phone,
an iPod or whatever else you have. While that doesn’t sound like a big deal,
the old Stadium was pre-cell phone and there only a few outlets in the entire
room.
There’s also an IBM ThinkPad with the revolving screen installed at each
locker. Ostensibly, it’s for the players to receive messages and make their
ticket requests. But of course the guys have already personalized the
desktops with family photos (Joba), a scene from 300 (A.J.),
a skull and crossbones (Bruney) and other things.
“I haven’t even turned mine on,” Jorge Posada said.
As for who is where, picture the clubhouse like a clock.
Jeter is at 1 o’clock. Then going clockwise around the room you have:
Burnett, Pettitte, Wang, Chamberlain, Sabathia, Cano, Molina, Pena,
Albaladejo, the doorway, Swisher, Damon, Nady, Teixeira, Gardner,
Ransom, Cabrera, Berroa, Matsui, Rivera, Ramirez, Veras, Coke, Bruney,
Rodriguez and then Posada back at 11 o’clock. There’s a doorway between
Jeter and Posada.
Jeter and Posada get the all-important empty locker next to them to store
more stuff. Perks of being around so long. Mo is next to a wall and a post,
so he is sort of secluded.
The photo over to the right is the “bat room.” Each player has a locker
within the room that he can store his bats. The lockers have combination
locks. In the past, there were bat racks within the clubhouse or the players
just stacked up their lumber in boxes near the lockers. No more.

There’s a room for bats. That’s how complete the place is.
“They said they wanted to build the best stadium in sports. I haven’t
seen every stadium but I can’t see any stadium being better than this,”
Jeter said. “I don’t know what else you could put into a stadium.”

The team will go about it in extreme comfort. The clubhouse is cavernous,
and the fresh start allowed the players to realign their lockers, which
sit beneath a replica of the famous facade, back-lit in blue. Mariano Rivera
has a stall in the middle of the room, on the left, and his setup men fan
out toward the back — the closer and his court.
Across the oval-shaped room are the lockers of the five starting pitchers,
all in a row. Burnett is first, followed by Andy Pettitte, Chien-Ming Wang,
Joba Chamberlain and Sabathia.
“I’ve got all my fellas around me,” Chamberlain said. “All the
starters. Mo copied us.”
On the right side of every locker is a mounted ThinkPad laptop with the
screen facing out, the choice of background wallpaper reflecting a slice
of personality. Jose Veras has a snapshot of himself with Rivera, Burnett
a scene from the action movie “300,” Sabathia a Michael Jordan logo.
Wang’s home page is the Chinese site for Yahoo.com.
Teixeira said he had not even tested his machine, which displayed only
practice times for a sample game in June. He spoke excitedly about the
size of the clubhouse, where two plush couches flank a giant interlocking
N.Y. on the carpet. But other factors are more important.

New York Yankees settling into their new home
by Marc Carig/The Star-Ledger

NEW YORK --
Derek Jeter needed an inning and a half to figure out where the balls and
strikes were listed on the scoreboard and he even got lost trying to get
to the clubhouse from the food room. On Day 2 in their new digs, the New
York Yankees were still learning about their surroundings.
Mariano Rivera likes the extra space in the bullpen, Joe Girardi came away
impressed with the laundry room. Jeter said he admitted that the new place
feels different than the old place. Of course, different isn't necessarily
bad.

"I haven't seen every stadium," Jeter said. "I can't see a stadium being
better than this."
Indeed, there were plenty of signs that the players were settling into
their new surroundings. Each locker in the new clubhouse features computer
screens. Many had already customized their desktops with some interesting
images. A quick survey of the clubhouse:
- A.J. Burnett: A screen shot from the movie "300.''
- Andy Pettitte: A photo of himself, pumping his fist on the mound.
- CC Sabathia: A version of the famous Jordan brand silhouette.
- Brian Bruney: An illustration of a skull and crossbones.
- Edwar Ramirez: A photo of a monster truck.
- Chien Ming-Wang: A photo of his head superimposed on Jim Carrey's body
in an old Ace Ventura poster.
Some have added even more technology to their already snazzy lockers,
including backup catcher Jose Molina, who brought in a pretty sweet iPod
dock. Andy Pettitte did the same. But a few hours before the game, Molina
had so much stuff around his locker that he looked like he was holding a
yard sale.
"Just moving in," Molina said.
As for whether the new stadium feels like the old stadium, it seems that
the verdict is split.
"Everything's pretty much the same," Jorge Posada said. "It seemed we
were still at the old stadium. The surroundings were different, but for
me it was the same."
Said Jeter: "Everything's different."
A few minutes passed before he finished speaking with a few lingering
reporters. He then grabbed his coat and walked out of the clubhouse
only to return seconds later.
"How do I get out of here?" he asked.
