New park turns into house of horrors
Yankees' blowout leaves fans stunned

Yankees fans Saturday found out there's no mercy rule in the big leagues.
The Bronx Bombers lost 22-4 to the Cleveland Indians, one of the worst
defeats in the history of the storied club.
And it didn't take long for thousands of frustrated fans to begin streaming
out of the brand-spanking-new stadium.
The exodus began right after the team gave up 14 runs in the secondinning -
the worst on record for the Yankees - when all nine players in the Indians
lineup scored.
"We thought Obama banned torture in the United States, but it doesn't count
for Yankees fans," said Larry Fannin, 51 of YorktownHeights, N.Y., who paid
$100 for his ticket. "The people around us were screaming we want a refund."
Yankees pitchers gave up six home runs and an amazing 25 hits to the
Indiansin the debacle.
"I should have stayed home and watched a girls softball game," said John
O'Brien, 46, a mortgage banker from Garnerville, N.Y., who has had season
tickets for 10 years. "Same result - at least they have a mercy rule."
The Yankees have given up 37 runs in their first three home games since the
new billion-dollarstadium officially opened on Thursday.
Some Yankees fans are already starting to lose faith in the team and its $200
million payroll after only 12 games into the season, with six wins and six
losses.
"After an embarrassing loss like this, someone either has to get fired, hired
or traded," said Jesse Sofie, 24, of East Hanover, N.J., outside the Stadium.
"This is the last straw. . . . I expected so much better."
The Indians have a habit of blowing out the Yankees in dramatic fashion.
Cleveland clobbered the Yankees 24-6 on July 29, 1928 - a team that featured
Yankee legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
The Indians also embarrassed the Yankees in August 2004, beating them 22-0.
Fans reserved their harshest criticism for starting pitcher Chien-Ming Wang,
who gave up eight runs in less than two innings - and didn't look sharp in
his two previous outings either.
"They need to send him down," said Rich Davis, 36, of Manville, N.J., as he
was exiting the Stadium. "He's bombed twice in a row. Send him back to the
minors."
Angelo Sciascia, a 29-year-old IT consultant from Brooklyn left in the third
inning.
"They should have at least given us half-priced hot dogs on the way out," he
said
