Backup catcher strains quad; team awaiting MRI results

NEW YORK -- So thin already at catcher, the Yankees suffered what could be a
significant blow when backup Jose Molina left Thursday's game after the fifth
inning with a strained left quad. The team was still awaiting the results of
an MRI exam after the game, but manager Joe Girardi said it was likely that
Molina may be joining Jorge Posada on the disabled list.

"It just depends on how serious it is," Girardi said.

Molina, not even running at full speed, strained the quad heading home on
Johnny Damon's two-run double in the fourth inning against the Rays. He
remained in the game to catch another inning, but then left to have his MRI
exam.

Rookie Francisco Cervelli took Molina's place behind the plate, and he will
likely start Friday.

The regular starter, Posada, landed on the DL earlier this week with a right
hamstring strain, and isn't eligible to return until May 21. If he does not
heal in time, he could be out somewhat longer.

Molina, who filled in at catcher after Posada's right shoulder surgery last
summer, was batting .273 with one home run this season.

Should Molina land on the DL, the Yankees will have to make two imminent
roster moves. Alex Rodriguez is due back Friday, and the Yankees would have
to make room for him and for a backup catcher, either Kevin Cash or Chris
Stewart.

Complicating matters, neither Cash nor Stewart is on the 40-man roster,
meaning the Yankees would likely have to designate someone for assignment and
risk losing that player.

"As far as the roster, I have no idea what we're going to do," Girardi said.

It's just the latest injury for New York, which has already seen Rodriguez,
Posada, relievers Brian Bruney and Damaso Marte, starter Chien-Ming Wang,
outfielder Xavier Nady and infielder Cody Ransom all spend time on the DL.

"It hurts, that hurts," starter Andy Pettitte said. "But nobody's going to
feel sorry for us."
