No mistake about it, Yanks great when not making errors
June 2, 2009
UPDATE: All good (and bad) streaks must come to an end - the Yankees'
major-league record of 18 straight games without an error ended moments
ago when Jorge Posada's throw sailed into center field when Elvis Andrus
swiped second with one out in the fourth inning. Andrus was credited with
a stolen base and Posada got an error as Andrus cruised into third.
As previously mentioned, Yanks are 3-13 when they boot one. Let's see how
this plays out.

Greetings, fans. Anthony McCarron pinch-blogging for Our Man Mark tonight.
Much of the pre-game chatter was about the Yanks' major-league record of
18 consecutive games without an error (since May 14). They have handled
660 chances flawlessly over that span. The last error was Ramiro Pena
booting a grounder in Toronto May 13 in the fourth inning. The starting
infield has made only five errors all year.
The Yanks are 27-8 when they don't make an error and 3-13 when they make
at least one. In other words, catch the ball, gentlemen.
Funny bit by the Yanks' media relations department - the note about defense
in the media packet is headlined “N_W YORK YANK__S.” Get it?
This is what Joe Girardi had to say on the matter: “Obviously, there is
going to be another error at some point. But the consistency of your
defense can play the whole season. A lot of it is mental preparation,
I believe, and physical preparation. There are going to be some tough balls
hit, tough plays, but defense is one of those things you can control a lot
better than maybe some of the other parts of the game.
“It (the streak) was not something I was aware of until yesterday, so
shame on me, I guess. I am proud of what our guys have accomplished. As I
said last night, it's through the hard work of the players and coaches and
the work they put in. It is one of the reasons we are playing well - we
aren't giving teams a whole lot of extra outs and in the American League,
as we all know, extra outs can lead to big innings and that's dangerous.”
In other news, Jose Molina had an MRI yesterday on his injured quad and
is supposed to be evaluated some time tonight. Xavier Nady (elbow) felt pain
on only two throws. Damaso Marte - excuse me, who? - is supposed to throw
a bullpen Friday. He has been out since May 3 (retroactive to April 26) with
left shoulder inflammation. Cody Ransom is headed to Scranton on Thursday
for rehab games.
Nick Swisher didn't start because Girardi was giving him the night off.
The Yanks discussed what we'll call “The Chien-Ming Wang Situation” and
are “on schedule” rotation-wise, Girardi said. Skipper quote: “We had
discussions and at this point, nothing has changed. Our guys are still on
schedule. We're happy with the progress that he's made, but at this point
we're staying on schedule.
“We haven't made any changes up until this point. We're staying on schedule
and we'll continue to evaluate it every day.”
A humble opinion, if I may, faithful readers: What does CMW have to do to
get back in the rotation? Wasn't everybody saying that he was back to his
old self in his last effort - three scoreless innings in Cleveland Sunday?
If that is the case, what else does a two-time 19-game winner have to show
to get his job back?
I think Phil Hughes is going to be a big-time pitcher, a rotation mainstay
for years to come. But Wang already is that.
I know Wang was awful at the start of the season. Dreadful, terrible.
But the Yankees need to know if he's back. Mop-up duty out of the pen is
not going to let them know that. Give him back his job.
