Wang progresses, but Yanks can't help
Righty's longest outing of season comes with little support

NEW YORK -- Chien-Ming Wang came into Wednesday's start pitching for his spot
in the Yankees' rotation, and though the struggling right-hander suffered his
fifth loss in five starts, he might have shown enough to earn another chance.

Wang was touched for an Adam Dunn solo homer and Nick Johnson's two-run
triple in a five-inning outing on Wednesday as the Yankees fell to the
Nationals, 3-2, at Yankee Stadium.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi acknowledged that results are "important" in
deciding Wang's fate, but he stressed that no decisions would be made on
Wednesday. Wang was capable, scattering six hits while walking two and
striking out four. He recorded 10 outs via ground ball, lowering his ERA from
14.34 to 12.65.

Dunn crushed a long solo home run off Wang in the fourth inning, coming on a
3-0 pitch, and Johnson drilled a two-run triple to left-center field that
sailed past Melky Cabrera's diving attempt and rolled all the way to the wall.

Nationals left-hander John Lannan, a Long Island native, made it through four
innings without allowing a hit until Robinson Cano broke up the bid with a
solo home run to right leading off the fifth.

Working quickly and changing speeds, Lannan joined the list of fresh faces to
keep the Yankees off balance on the homestand. Johnny Damon drew the Yankees
within a run in the ninth, leading off the frame with a solo home run off
Lannan.
