NEW YORK - Yankees outfielder Xavier Nady will not play again this season after
tearing a ligament in his right elbow during a Triple-A game on Thursday night.

Nady re-injured his elbow making a throw in the third inning and left the game
two innings later, unable to continue. Nady was not available for comment
yesterday but told several teammates that he would need Tommy John surgery.

"It's bad news," Nady wrote in a text message.

Nady was first injured while making a throw against the Rays on April 14. He
was initially told he had torn the ulnar collateral ligament and would need
surgery. Nady first had the surgery in 2001 when he was in the minors.

But when Nady sought a second opinion, he was told about an experimental
procedure that could allow him to play again this season. It involved injecting
his own platelet-rich plasma into the tear to speed the healing process. Nady
went through the painful procedure several times with what he thought were
successful results as he was initially able to throw without pain.

Nady played in eight extended-spring-training games in Florida, playing right
field once. He started an assignment with Scranton on Tuesday but did not have
to make a throw under game conditions until Wednesday.

Another surgery would sideline Nady for the rest of this season and much of
next season, if not all of it. The 30-year-old will be a free agent at the end
of the year.

According to Yankees manager Joe Girardi, Nady will travel to California within
the next few days to meet with Dr. Lewis Yocum. It was Yocum who performed the
first surgery on Nady.

Nady hit .270 with 12 homers and 42 RBI in 66 games for the Yankees after being
acquired from Pittsburgh last season.
