Yankee Hitters Continue Disappearing Act in Atlanta By TYLER KEPNER Published: June 23, 2009 ATLANTA — The Yankees are in a tailspin. They look eager to return to the comfort of the American League and desperate for their highest-paid player to stop performing at his worst. Another National League team stifled the Yankees on Tuesday night, when the Atlanta Braves took a 4-0 victory at Turner Field. Alex Rodriguez started for just the second time in five days, but still looked rundown. A single skipped by him to start a three-run rally, and he went 0 for 4, extending his slump to 1 for 23. “I thought he had some good swings tonight,” Manager Joe Girardi said. “There were no results. It’s taking him a little time. He’s been in a funk. But he’s going to come out of it, too. History’s on his side. He’s too good of a hitter.” With Rodriguez batting .143 in June, the Yankees have dropped 9 of their last 13 to tumble from a one-game lead in the A.L. East to a five-game deficit behind the Boston Red Sox. They are 2-5 against Washington, Florida and Atlanta, the three bottom teams in the National League East. Most discouraging, perhaps, is the continued disappearance of the Yankees’ hitters. They were humbled by yet another unfamiliar pitcher, the rookie Tommy Hanson, and went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. Jorge Posada struck out all four times up. Derek Jeter said: “We didn’t hit, we haven’t hit, that’s why we’ve been losing. It’s nothing deeper than that.” The Braves scored three runs with two out in the third against Chien-Ming Wang, who fell to 0-6 but probably deserved better. He was not as sharp as Phil Hughes, who throttled the Braves for two innings of relief, but Girardi said Wang would keep his spot in the rotation. Wang has worked five innings and allowed three runs in each of his last two starts, though he threw only 62 pitches this time. Last Wednesday against the Nationals, he labored for 91. Wang was cruising in the third inning Tuesday when Yunel Escobar bounced a hard single just to the left of Rodriguez, who had hip surgery in March. It was not an easy play, but it is the kind he would have made in the past. This time, he could not snare it. “I took a dive at it,” Rodriguez said. “The last few days, I’ve been feeling much better with my body. I feel like I’m moving much better. He hit it hard, I dove. It got through.” The hit set in motion the three-run burst. Escobar stole second and went to third when Posada threw the ball into center field from his knees for an error. Chipper Jones walked, then Brian McCann lifted a low pitch to center for a run-scoring double. Up next was Garret Anderson, the former Angel who is still picking on the Yankees. Anderson took another low pitch and drove it to the gap in right-center for a two-run double to make it 3-0. “The first was a good pitch,” Wang said, referring to McCann’s double. “The second one cut down the middle and low.” Wang retired seven of the next eight hitters and was due up third in the sixth inning. If there had been two outs, Girardi said, he would have let Wang bat. Instead, Brett Gardner singled with one out, and Girardi lifted Wang for a pinch-hitter, Hideki Matsui. 吉總說如果是兩出局的話,那第六局不會換代打就讓王打, 但Gardner安打上壘,所以在換代打。 Matsui walked to chase Hanson, but Peter Moylan got Jeter to bounce into his fourth double play in four games, ending the inning. The Yankees had no hits the rest of the night. In their last nine games, the Yankees faced eight starters they had never faced before. Those pitchers have a combined earned run average of 2.54, and only one allowed more than three earned runs against the Yankees. The slide may continue Wednesday, when the Yankees face Kenshin Kawakami, a rookie right-hander from Japan. Girardi said he was pleased with the effort — 9 or 10 players took early hitting Tuesday — but added that he might change the lineup and had already addressed the team. “We’ve had some discussions with them about fight,” Girardi said. “You’ve got to fight your way out of this. That’s the only thing you can do, because nobody’s going to feel sorry for you.” INSIDE PITCH C. C. Sabathia, who left his last start with left biceps tendinitis, said he would throw about 25 pitches in the bullpen Wednesday instead of his usual 45. Sabathia has not played catch since leaving Sunday’s game in the second inning, but he said he was confident he would start Friday against the Mets. “I feel like I’m going to feel fine tomorrow,” Sabathia said. ... Infielder Cody Ransom is expected to join the Yankees on Wednesday after 60 days on the disabled list with a strained quadriceps. “He could help us a lot,” Joe Girardi said. ... The Yankees’ protest of Sunday’s loss to the Florida Marlins was denied by Bob DuPuy, baseball’s president and chief operating officer, who did not cite a reason. ... Johnny Damon was out of the lineup again because of lingering soreness in his right calf. He pinch-hit in the ninth inning and walked. ... Derek Jeter overtook Tampa Bay’s Evan Longoria for the A.L. lead in All-Star votes. Mark Teixeira also crept ahead of Boston’s Kevin Youkilis for the lead at first base. Final results will be announced July 5. http://tinyurl.com/ntak4g -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.109.23.38
