pitched four scoreless innings in relief, the Yankees erased a four-run
deficit and beat the Blue Jays, 10-8.

Chamberlain was booed off the mound after a sluggish three and two-thirds
innings, but Jonathan Albaladejo, who replaced Wang on the roster Sunday, and
Aceves followed by not allowing a run. Since Girardi had no plans to use Phil
Coke, Phil Hughes or Mariano Rivera, the Yankees told Aceves they needed him
to be effective and durable. He was both in recording his first career save.

Interestingly, what the Yankees said about Aceves was what they wish they
could say about Chamberlain. Girardi said Aceves “knows how to pitch” and
lauded him for using different pitches and changing speeds. Rivera said it
seemed as if Aceves “has been pitching for 15 years.”

Then there is the talented Chamberlain. As Girardi assessed Chamberlain’s
performance, he mentioned how throwing a 3-2 slider to the leadoff hitter,
Marco Scutaro, had set a poor tone. By citing what Chamberlain did against
the first batter of the game, Girardi indicated how exasperated he was.

Girardi said Chamberlain, who surrendered a career-worst eight runs (three
earned) and nine hits, needed to attack the hitters more. When the Blue Jays
scored five unearned runs in the fourth, Chamberlain threw first-pitch balls
to five of the eight hitters he faced.

After an error by third baseman Cody Ransom, Chamberlain recorded an out,
then gave up four straight hits. Aaron Hill’s two-run homer to right gave

a 4.60 earned run average. But he has lasted only 31 1/3 innings, meaning he
has left a lot of outs for the relievers to collect.

But Chamberlain disagreed with Girardi’s theory. He said that he did a solid
job of attacking the hitters and that he felt as good as he had all season.
His fastball averaged about 93 miles per hour, but he did not have the
intimidating velocity that he has often shown. A cult hero when he pitched
out of the bullpen, Chamberlain dismissed the verbal abuse that landed on him.

The Yankees were expeditious about cleaning up after Chamberlain. Matsui
clubbed a three-run homer off Brett Cecil in the fourth, and Jeter, who had
four hits, added a two-run shot off B. J. Ryan in the fifth that put the
Yankees ahead, 9-8. Jorge Posada, who tied a career high with four hits,
doubled in the 10th run.

Chamberlain’s failure to pitch reliably and to pitch deeply was nudged to
the background because the Yankees won. Still, he showed why he could be a
fitful starter to watch. The talent is there, but the execution is not
always. Girardi volunteered that he and the coaches would have discussions,
some of them animated, with Chamberlain about being more aggressive.

last 11 games. Aceves was a savior in relief and Matsui, Jeter and Posada had
productive games. But Chamberlain had a short, rough day. The questions about
his pitching will persist.

As expected, Chien-Ming Wang was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a
strained right shoulder and bursitis. He will not throw until after the
All-Star break, a span of 12 days. The Yankees hope the extra rest will allow
him to strengthen his shoulder, but they offered no timetable for his
possible return. Alfredo Aceves, who threw 43 pitches Sunday, said he would
like to start in Wang’s place Thursday
