本日最中肯的意見，難得Kepner寫這種文章

重點: 小老闆希望洋基有光芒那樣的活力，但耐得住一到兩年幾乎墊底的痛苦嗎?

1. 當洋基低潮持續時，小老闆Hank也失去了耐心

2. 當一個球隊專屬的運動作家(beat writer)，一般Kepner不想做的就是質疑這個球隊的
   表現。他認為這麼作是相當危險的，除非有大量明顯的證據否則他都不想提出質疑。最
   要不得的事莫過於說一個球員或一個球隊的球員就是打得不用心。

3. 現在透過Kevin Kernan轉敘，我們聽到了Hank Steinbrenner卻作了很多這樣的事。
   Steinbrenner告訴Kernan說: "我不是說他們打得不盡力，只是他們必需打得更努力點
   。"他還補上一句話說: "洋基球員應該開始學光芒隊打球的方式。洋基球員必須開始像
   他們年輕時想要追求一份大合約時的拼命法，他們現在要覺得他們好像3A球隊打球努力
   想要進到大聯盟。這樣的態度和火力是洋基球員必須表現出來的。" (這種講法連
   Kepner都看不下去了)

4. 昨晚Jason Giambi七局率先打出一發像子彈般的球飛到右外野，但是他又老又慢，只能
   跑成一壘打。(小老闆難不成要Giambi馬上年輕20歲馬上飛到三壘)。最後洋基在第七局
   留下了一個在三壘的殘壘。那這是不是說明Giambi缺乏火力了? 絕對不是，昨晚他四次
   打擊四次都上壘，他只是局限在他的能力但儘力去比賽了。

5. 光芒隊打球侵略心很強，甚至一些洋基球員都感受到兩隊打球方式的差異。在九局一
   出局情況打出追平比數洋春彈的松井秀喜便表示: "光芒的精力絕對是超過我們球隊
   的。"

6. 但有時候卻衝得太過份了會傷到球隊。第六局一出局時Eric Hinske躍身撲接Derek
   Jeter打出的安打。可以預期的是，沒接到後等他拿到球時Jeter已經跑到三壘變成三壘
   安打。這對Hinske而言是個不好的賭注，還好Edwin Jackson維持住0-1的比數沒有丟分
   。

7. 這是去年拿到5勝15敗的同一位Edwin Jackson。23歲的年紀去年拿到5勝15敗的成績還
   讓他維持在光芒隊先發輪值的位置，今年看起來他的球技就更亮麗點了。

8. 假如一個洋基的年輕投手拿到5勝15敗的成績，他還可以在洋基的先發輪值裡保有他的
   位置嗎? Tom Glavine變成勇士隊的王牌投手前的成績是7勝17敗，Greg Maddux變成小
   熊隊的王牌投手前的成績是6勝14敗。在很多事情上Hank Steinbrenner都說他對年輕
   球員有耐心，但Steinbrenner又渴求立即獲得勝利。

9. 這樣的目標可是相互衝突的，這就是為什麼這種轉換洋基文化的想法是這麼令人感到
   迷惑。洋基球隊從來就不曾像光芒那麼年輕及看起來那麼有活力；就根本就不是洋基
   在YES Network和新洋基球場的年代裡能夠看得的洋基球隊的樣子。

10. 但是假如Steinbrenner希望洋基隊更像光芒隊 － 無論如何我們聽到的是這樣?
    那他可能要習慣洋基需要一到兩年(成績很爛)的過渡時期。

One of the things I generally won’t do as a beat writer is question a team’
s effort. I’ve always thought it’s dangerous, unless there is a large
amount of obvious evidence. There’s nothing more damning than to say an
athlete or a group of athletes just doesn’t care.

Now, via Kevin Kernan, we have Hank Steinbrenner pretty much doing just that.
“I’m not saying they are not giving the effort, but they need to be playing
harder,” Steinbrenner told Kernan, adding that the Yankees have “got to
start playing the way the Rays are playing. (The Yankees) need to start
treating it like when they were younger players and going after that big
contract, like they’re in (Triple-A) and trying to make the majors. That’s
the kind of attitude and fire the players have to have.”
Attitude? Fire? Is that what’s really wrong with the Yankees? A team like
the Yankees always looks old and slow when they’re losing, and here’s why —
 they are.

Jason Giambi led off the seventh inning last night with a bullet to the right
field corner. But he’s old and slow, and he could only get a single, and the
Yankees left a man on third that inning. Does that mean Giambi lacks fire?
Not at all. He reached base four times last night. He’s just limited in what
he can do.

The Rays play aggressively, and even some Yankees sense a difference in
style. Hideki Matsui, whose one-out homer tied the game in the ninth,
admitted, “Their energy is definitely more than ours.”

But sometimes that works against a team. Eric Hinske inexplicably dove for a
hit by Derek Jeter last night with one out in the sixth. Predictably, the
ball got by him and Jeter had a triple. It was a bad gamble by Hinske, but
Edwin Jackson survived the jam.

That would be the same Edwin Jackson who went 5-15 last season. At 23 years
old, he kept his place in the Rays’ rotation and looks a lot more polished
now.

If a young Yankees pitcher went 5-15, would he keep his spot? Tom Glavine
went 7-17 before becoming an ace for the Braves. Greg Maddux went 6-14 before
becoming an ace for the Cubs. Among the many things Hank Steinbrenner has
said is that he will be patient with young pitchers. Yet Steinbrenner also
burns to win immediately.

Those can be conflicting goals, and that is why this attempt at a
transformation of the Yankees’ culture is so fascinating. They may never be
as young and outwardly energetic as the Rays; that’s just not the Yankees’
 makeup in this era of the YES Network and the new Yankee Stadium.

But if Steinbrenner wants to be more like the Rays – and whoever thought we’
d hear that? – he might have to live with a year or two of transition.
