As the Yankees search within the organization for pitching help following the
early-season struggles of Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy, they might look no
further than the Trenton Thunder's Daniel McCutchen. With Hughes on the
disabled list and Kennedy ineffective, McCutchen could prove to be the next
pitching prospect you should know.

    當洋基遭遇到Phil Hughes和Ian Kennedy球季初投得相當掙扎時，洋基找尋可以幫助
球隊的投手人選時，還沒有進一步考慮到2A雷電隊的Daniel McCutchen。但是當Hughes上
到傷兵名單，Kennedy投得狀況不好時，McCutchen卻可能證明了他將會是下一位你會想到
可以幫助洋基的新秀投手。

Unlike Hughes, McCutchen is no kid. The 6-2, 195-pound right-hander is two
years removed from the University of Oklahoma and will be 26 in September. He
made his pro debut with the Staten Island Yankees in 2006, opening the season
here and making two starts before being promoted to Charleston.

   不像Hughes，McCutchen已經不是個孩子了(年紀不小了)。這位6呎2吋，195磅的右投

Unlike Kennedy, he doesn't nibble. He goes right after hitters, and has 43
strikeouts in 46 innings this season to prove it.

He's got major-league stuff: a fastball in the mid-90s, a good slider and an
improving curveball. And good numbers: a 4-2 record with a 2.14 ERA.

But is he ready for the big leagues?

Trenton manager Tony Franklin says McCutchen can definitely pitch at a higher
level. Tino Martinez, a special assistant for the Yankees, says he could skip
Triple A and get big-league hitters out right now.

洋基球團的特別助理人員Tino Martinez表示，McCutchen現在就可以跳過3A，直接升上去

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is intrigued, but not yet ready to say
he's the organization's next Joba Chamberlain.

    洋基隊的總經理Brian Cashman也對此很感興趣，但沒有表示McCutchen的程度已經足
夠成為洋基隊下一個Joba Chamberlain。

"It's too early to say that. But he's certainly throwing very well at Double
A right now," Cashman said. "He opened our eyes in the spring, too. He works
fast; he's got some power stuff that goes with it. He's got a great
mentality. All he's done is win since he's been in the pros."

    Cashman說: "說他現在就可以上到大聯盟還太早。當然現在他2A投得非常好。春訓時
他的表現就讓我們大開眼界。他投球的節奏快；他具有一些很有威力的球質及可以相互搭
配的球路；他也有很好的心理素質。而且他進到職業球隊以後，便儘全力想要贏球。"

McCutchen believes in his stuff and says he's ready for whatever the Yankees
ask of him. But for now, all he can do is wait, something he's been doing his
entire baseball career.

    McCutchen對自己的球威有信力，也認為無論洋基隊需要他作什麼他都準備好為球隊
效力。但現在，他所能做的就是等待，這也是一些他所有棒球生涯一直在做的事情。　　

(SUB)DRIVEN TO SUCCEED

McCutchen gave glimpses of his pitching talent at Norman (Oklahoma) High
School, where he struck out 27 batters in just 18 innings his senior year in
2001. But he was mostly a strong-armed shortstop who didn't hit very much
when he walked on to Central Oklahoma.
　　
    McCutchen被發掘到他投球的天份時，是2001年他還在Oklahoma的Norman中學高三時，
他在18局的投球裡就三振了27位打者。但是他大部份的時候是擔任游擊手，有很強的臂力
但打不出太多的安打，然後他進到Division II Central Oklahoma學校就讀。

It was there that McCutchen stretched out his arm and transformed into a
pitcher, thus beginning his long journey to the pros.

    就是在Central Oklahoma學校時，McCutchen開始伸展強化他的手臂，轉變為一位投手
，因此開啟了他進到職業棒球長遠的旅途。

After going 4-0 with a 2.76 ERA (and 38 strikeouts in 29 innings of relief)
at Central Oklahoma, he transferred to Grayson (Oklahoma) Community College.
A shoulder injury limited him to just two innings of work, but when you light
up radar guns the way he did, teams will take a chance anyway, and the
Yankees drafted him in the 27th round of the 2003 draft.

    在Cental Oklahoma學校拿到4勝0敗2.76的自責失分率(而且在29局後援裡投出38次的
三振)，他轉到了Oklahoma的Grayson社區學院就讀。由於肩膀的傷勢讓他只投了兩局，但
是當你打開雷達測速看看他投球的樣子，各個球隊還是會想給個機會試試看，因此洋基在
2003年的選秀中在第27輪選中了他。

Feeling he was better than a 27th-round pick, McCutchen opted to transfer to
the University of Oklahoma in his hometown. It was the first of three
consecutive drafts where McCutchen spurned offers to turn pro, passing on the
Rays (28th round in 2004) and the Cardinals (12th round in 2005).

    McCutchen覺得自己應該比第27輪選秀的順位表現得還好，因此拒絕了簽約轉到家鄉的
Oklahoma大學就讀。這是他連續三年拒絕進入職業球選秀簽約的第一次，另兩次則是2004
年光芒隊第28輪，2005年紅雀隊第12輪。

He finally signed with the Yankees, who made him a 15th-round pick in 2006,
but has never forgotten how many teams passed on him -- round after round,
year after year -- as his name sunk to the bottom of the draft, a cumulative
snub that he takes out to the mound with him virtually every time he pitches.

    最後他還是和洋基隊簽約了，洋基隊在2006年第15輪選秀挑中了他，但是他永遠不會
忘記有多少球隊跳過他 -- 一輪過一輪，一年又一年 -- 他的名字掉到選秀的很後面，這

"It drives me a ton," he said. "Even if I go to the big leagues and pitch for
15 years, I don't know if it will ever stop driving me. I want to prove
people wrong. That really motivates me and it always will."

    "這個不服氣的念頭給了我努力很大的動力，即使我如果可以上到大聯盟投個15年，我
都不知道這個不服氣的念頭是否會停止鞭策我向前。我要證明那些人看走了眼。這樣的念

After signing with the Yankees, McCutchen went to Class-A affiliates Staten
Island and Charleston in the summer of 2006. But after pitching just 30
innings, his season came to a sudden end. He failed a drug test.

     在和洋基簽約後，McCutchen到了2006年夏天到了1A所屬的Staten Island和
Charleston隊。但是在投了30局後，他的球季卻突然終止了，因為他沒有通過藥物測試。

(SUB)'STUPID MISTAKE'

'愚蠢的犯錯'

When a baseball player tests positive for a banned substance these days, the
first assumption is usually steroids. And that's what many people thought
when McCutchen failed a drug screening in 2006, causing embarrassment for his
entire family.

     但一個棒球選手最近在禁藥測試顯示陽性反應時，大家最先想到的通常是類固醇。
當2006年McCutchen沒有通過藥物篩檢時大家都認為他服用了類固醇，這使得他全部的家
族因此蒙羞。

"At the time, it was a very difficult thing to deal with, being in our
hometown," said his father, Tim McCutchen. "It was hard. People still ask me
about it sometimes. But it's all been cleared up now."

    他的父親Tim McCutchen表示: "在那時，在我們家鄉這是件燙手山芋。這件事很難
解釋清楚，有些時候人們還是和向我問起這件事，但是現在這件事已經澄清了。"

Truth is, says McCutchen, he was flagged for Adderall, a commonly prescribed
stimulant for attention-deficit disorder.

    McCutchen表示，事實是他服用了Adderall，是一般用來治療注意力不足過動失調的
興奮劑。

McCutchen, who calls the incident a "stupid mistake," said he has not been
diagnosed with the disorder but was prescribed the medication to help him
through a difficult semester in college.

    McCutchen把這意外事件稱為"愚蠢的犯錯”，他說並沒有被診斷出患了注意力不足過
動失調，但是醫生卻開了這個藥物幫助他度過大學中難熬的一個學期。

"I had 17 hours of upper-division business classes and I was playing
baseball," he said. "Not easy. I took it to study and I had a prescription
for it; a bottle with my name on it."

    他說: "我有17小時進階的商業課程要上，而且我還要打棒球。要熬過是不太容易，我
服用這個藥物去上課，我有醫生囑咐使用這個藥物；有一瓶藥上面寫上我的名字。"

Despite the setback, McCutchen made the best of his lost time, returning home
to Norman where he signed up for international finances classes and completed
his degree.

    雖然遇到這樣的挫敗，McCutchen還是儘力去利用他沒辦法投球的時間，他回到家鄉到
了Norman的學校，去上國務財務的課程而且完成了他的學位。

The suspension, however, cost him the final 30 games of 2006 and the first 20
of 2007. But since then, he has looked like a pitcher making up for lost
time.

    但是這次的禁賽讓他在2006年最後30場以及2007年的前20場比賽都無法出賽。但之後
的出賽，他的表現卻像是一位沒有被禁止出賽的投手。

(SUB)AWAITING HIS CHANCE

等待他的機會

At Tampa last year, McCutchen was just too good for Class-A hitters, going
11-2 before being called up to Trenton. He finished the year a combined 14-4
with a 2.47 ERA.

    去年在Tampa，對1A的打者而他的表現實在太好了，在他被升到2A Trenton前他的成
績是11勝2敗。2007年球季他1A和2A總計的成績是14勝4敗 2.47的自責失分率。

This year he's been just as good, pitching into the seventh inning in his
past five starts for Trenton.

    今年他的表現還是像去年那麼好，他在Trenton的近五次先發全都投到第七局。

Though he's been primarily a starter since his senior year at Oklahoma, the
Yankees are already confident McCutchen can help them in the bullpen. But
then again, the Yankees crave starters.

    雖然從他在Oklahoma大三時開始他就是一位先發投手，洋基卻早已決定讓他以進到牛
棚來幫助球隊。但是之後再一次的，洋基還是迫切地需要先發投手。

No matter how he is used, Franklin is confident McCutchen will succeed as
much because of his talent as his steely makeup.

    無論他會如何被使用，Franklin相信他還是會這麼成功，因為不僅有很好的天賦，還
有鋼鐵般的意志和心理素質(makeup)。

"I played with Joaquin Andujar for four years in the minors, and people said
he was a nut," Franklin said. "But he was quite the competitor. If you beat
him, then you beat a pretty good pitcher. I get the same sense from Cutch. He
never backs off, and his stuff is certainly good enough to pitch at a higher
level."

    Franklin表示: "我和Joaquin Andujar在小聯盟打過四年的球，人們說他是個棒球狂
。但是他是相當有競爭力的人。假如你想打敗他，那麼你要有打敗一個相當好的投手的準
備。我從Cutch身上看到了相同的感覺。Cutch從來不會退縮，他的球威絕對好到足夠可以
到更高的層級去投球。"

Of course, that was the prevailing opinion with Hughes and Kennedy too. So,
will McCutchen get his chance soon?

    當然，先前大家對Hughes和Kennedy的意見普遍也是如此。所以，McCutchen將會很快
得到他的機會嗎?

Cashman, who saw Igawa get roughed up last weekend before Rasner pitched his
second straight solid start, isn't saying. But he doesn't appear apprehensive
about giving another talented minor-leaguer a shot.

    上週在Rasner投出第二場優質的先發表現前，Cashman看到Igawa投得亂七八糟卻沒有
表示什麼，但是也沒有對給予有天份的小聯盟球手一點機會顯露出憂心。

"My inclination is always to turn to within before I have to go outside," he
said. "I'd hate to go outside only to find out shortly thereafter that I had
the answer sitting there right under my nose."

     Cashman表示: "我的想法傾向是在我有必要向外交易之前，總是會先從農場系統裡找
到替補的球員。我討厭只是往外找一些短期間能夠幫助球隊的球員，而忽略掉眼前農場裡
就有一些可以幫助球隊的解答。"
