重點:
1. Cashman
New York Yankees' Cashman wants to change his legacy

NEW YORK -- As Brian Cashman was mulling over whether to stay on as Yankees
general manager, he remembered a favorite saying of Reggie Jackson's:
"When you have the bat in your hand, you can always change the story."
As Cashman pondered his future, he heard and read some opinions that he, in
essence, inherited a World Series-winning team and turned it into a team that
this year missed the playoffs for the first time since 1993.
"The story line that was going to be written if I left, I didn't agree with,"
Cashman said Wednesday at a news conference. "I'm staying to change the
story. I'm not saying it's going to change overnight. But I'm telling you
it's not going to be written inaccurately."
Three years ago, when Cashman's contract expired, he stayed because owner
George Steinbrenner asked him to. This time, he is staying to clear his name.
Once Cashman decided Tuesday to continue with the Yankees, he accepted
co-chairperson Hal Steinbrenner's first contract offer, a three-year deal
through 2011.
"There's unfinished business here," Cashman said, "and I've chosen to finish
that business."
By that he means the reshaping of the organization that started after the
2005 season, when Cashman was awarded full authority over baseball
operations. Cashman set about re-emphasizing player development and holding
on to prospects.
"For a long time, we've been old, and everybody knows it, right?" Cashman
said defiantly. "And for a long time, everybody pointed it out. So now, when
you start to fix it, people (say), 'Oh my god, you've missed the playoffs!
Off with his head!'
"That's fine. That's part of this town. I accept it. I'm not running from it.
I'm here to just say to you guys, I'm not going to let that story -- 'Off
with his head' -- stay. I'm planning on making it different."
It's how the Yankees created the core of the late 1990s teams -- Derek Jeter,
Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Bernie Williams -- and it's
why some of what Cashman read over the past week rankled him.
"It don't like that some people forget that I've been here since 1986," he
said, "that I've been a part of this franchise when it wasn't very good, that
I was part of the rebuilding process as assistant GM."
Cashman admitted to "growing pains" over the past year as Hal and Hank
Steinbrenner took over ownership duties from their father George. Last winter
was "tough," Cashman said, as Hank Steinbrenner spoke out on Johan Santana
and other matters. But by July, when the three met before the trade deadline
and were able to come to consensus, Cashman felt more comfortable with the
new arrangement.
"We had a great deal of honest dialogue throughout the season," Cashman said.
"The first year, I think, was a year of adjustment to everybody.
"I feel better about the process and the people."
Despite Hank Steinbrenner's talk of forming an "advisory group," Cashman said
his new deal includes the same power structure as before.
"Is there going to be any new advisory board? No," Cashman said. "It's no
different than what we've done in the past, I promise you that."
The first orders of business will be deciding on the 2009 coaching staff and
then working on any of the Yankees' own free agents they want to retain. The
process starts with a gathering of the team's pro scouts, in the next two
weeks or so in New York, and then an organizational meeting with ownership in
Tampa, Fla.
The group of Yankees free agents includes pitchers Mike Mussina and Andy
Pettitte, first baseman Jason Giambi and right fielder Bobby Abreu.
The rotation will be a priority this winter, with only Chien-Ming Wang and
Joba Chamberlain (if he's considered a starter) penciled in for spots.
While the bullpen will probably stay intact, Rivera is scheduled for surgery
next Monday to remove a calcification from the top of his right shoulder.
