Marte’s deal fit the lefty market

Spoke to Brian Cashman tonight about the signing of Damaso Marte. Basically
it came down to this: They need a reliable lefty out of the pen and the deal
they signed him to was a reasonable one.

How so? Consider these contracts signed last winter by lefty relievers:

Scott Schoeneweis (Mets): three years, $10.8 million

J.C. Romero (Phillies): three years, $12 million

Jamie Walker (Orioles): three years, $12 million

That’s the market. Had Marte started taking offers, he might have done
better.

“We looked at him over a broad range of his work. His stuff is there and
finding a left-hander has been difficult,” Cashman said. “I can’t say
exactly what his role will be, but he can pitch from the fifth inning through
to the eighth.”

Cashman said when he asked the lefty hitters on his club what they thought of
Marte, they said his stuff remains nasty. Marte also has the unqualified
endorsement of one Mariano Rivera.

看來價錢蠻合理的, 左手好牛真的難找果然蠻值錢的...
