Wang working to regain his confidence

NEW YORK -- It's understandable that anything Chien-Ming Wang does that
resembles his performance during last year's American League Division Series
loss to Cleveland would be addressed.

So Wang and pitching coach Dave Eiland have focused on the right-hander's
strongest pitch, his sinker, which hasn't been as sharp recently because
he's not staying back enough on the mound while releasing it, said Eiland,
who was pitching coach at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last season.

"I saw it in the playoffs last year," said Eiland, whose ace is set to start
on Thursday in the finale of a three-game home series against Toronto. "I

year. We addressed that in Spring Training. He kind of fell back into some
old habits."

Wang will try for different results than those of his last three starts,
in which he's given up 17 earned runs in 19 1/3 innings. He hasn't picked
up a victory for the Yankees in five games, the longest winless streak of
his career.

Wang said that his sinker has been flat and that he needs to keep his arm
up and slow his body during the release. Still, his problems have been
easily identifiable, issues that reminded Eiland of last October.

In that playoff series against Cleveland, Wang tossed 5 2/3 innings and
surrendered 12 earned runs in two starts.

He was the Opening Day starter this year and had a solid April, with a
3.23 ERA in six starts. But his May numbers -- a 5.03 ERA in six starts --
took a hit with his three most recent outings.

It was a bumpy period, but after productive side sessions, Eiland said that
Wang's confidence should be just as high as ever.

Wang is 4-2 with a 3.98 ERA in eight career starts against the Blue Jays.
TOR: RHP Dustin McGowan (4-4, 3.95 ERA)
McGowan is 2-2 with a 5.21 ERA in his career against the Yankees.
