Stunning night at the Stadium
The odds of Joba Chamberlain finishing his career with an ERA of 0.74 and
no blown saves were pretty slim. But tonight’s result was certainly
stunning. Consider these stats:
* He had given up three earned runs in his career (36.1 innings) previously.
* The last time he walked two batters in an inning was in his debut last
August when he was trying to throw the ball through a brick wall in
Toronto.
* It was only the second homer he has ever allowed.
* It was the first run he has allowed at Yankee Stadium in 14 appearances.
* It was the second time in 31 appearances he walked the leadoff hitter.
“It’s over with,” Chamberlain said. “It sucks when it happens but you
understand it’s part of the game.”
David Dellucci has 10 career pinch-hit homers. Nice call by Eric Wedge,
pinch hitting for his No. 5 hitter.
A few things:
Those people who booed the kid at the Stadium should be ashamed of
themselves. …
Joba was a stand-up guy, going right to his locker after Joe Girardi was
done his press conference and answering every question. Teammates notice
stuff like that. …
Joba and Jose Molina clearly had some issues as the rookie
(yes, he’s still a rookie) shook him off several times. The pitcher
has to throw the pitch, but it’s probably best to listen to a catcher
like Molina. Watch tomorrow how often Wang shakes him off. The over/under
is once. Jorge Posada had some similiar issues with Joba last season.
But what could anybody say? Maybe it takes giving up three runs to realize
that your catcher maybe knows what he’s doing.
As for the rest of the game, while the Yankees had a chance to win they
continue to leave runs on the table. Grady Sizemore’s catch in the fourth
inning proved huge.
Great matchup tomorrow, Chien-Ming Wang (6-0, 3.00) vs. Cliff Lee (5-0, 0.96).
It’ll be interesting to see whether Giambi sits with a lefty on the mound
after he had some good swings tonight. Hard to sit Hideki Matsui (20 of 55)
or Bobby Abreu.
