Hughes could return to Yankees By Peter Abraham The Journal News ‧ August 8, 2008 ARLINGTON, Texas - Phil Hughes might soon become an option for the Yankees. The right-hander pitched 4 2/3 effective innings for Triple-A Scranton last night, allowing one run on three hits against the Pawtucket Red Sox. Hughes threw 40 of his 68 pitches for strikes and might need only one more minor-league start before being ready for the majors. Hughes hasn't pitched for the Yankees since late April because of a fractured rib. Hughes struck out two and walked two. He has allowed one run in 11 1/3 innings in the minors. "It was really flowing through the first three (innings), and I really didn't have a chance to get into counts where I could throw my changeup and my breaking ball and stuff like that," Hughes said. "For the last two innings, I really wanted to mix in some pitches." Hughes will extend to 85 pitches in his next start. "That gives you something to work with. You can probably get into the sixth or seventh inning, maybe more than that if you're economical," Hughes said. "It feels like it's almost to that point where I can throw a full start basically." Pudge recovering: Pudge Rodriguez had a noticeable limp as he made his way from his locker to a pot of coffee only a few feet away. But Rodriguez believes he will be ready to catch tonight after bruising his right knee on Wednesday night. "It feels better. The swelling has gone down," said Rodriguez, who was injured in a collision at the plate with David Murphy of the Rangers in the second inning. Murphy got the worse of it as he strained a knee ligament and was placed on the disabled list. Jose Molina caught last night. Rookie outfielder Justin Christian, who caught in the bullpen Wednesday, is the emergency catcher. Joba to Tampa: Joba Chamberlain will travel to Tampa, Fla., today to start a rehab program at the team facility. He was placed on the disabled list on Wednesday with what was described as rotator cuff tendinitis. "He's going to get some treatment there," manager Joe Girardi said. "It's better to be around trainers." Chamberlain will rest his arm for at least a week before being examined again. If cleared, he would then start a throwing program. Matsui mashes: Hideki Matsui took batting practice in Tampa and hit 10 home runs. He then further tested his sore left knee by running six 90-foot sprints in the outfield. "I was able to run, and I didn't have any problems after that," he told the Associated Press through a translator. "So, in that sense, I'm pretty satisfied. Extra bases: Andy Pettitte shot down a tabloid report that he would miss his start on Sunday against the Angels because of an injury. "Nothing like that has been said. I'm fine," he said. "I'll be pitching." ... Tony Pena coached third base last night and will again tonight. Bobby Meacham was given time off to attend the wedding of his daughter in Colorado. Ally Meacham, a former backup danger for the pop star Rihanna, is marrying Maurice Evans of the NBA's Atlanta Hawks. ... Carl Pavano threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings for Double-A Trenton in his latest rehab start, allowing one hit. ... Right-hander Victor Zambrano, who was signed to a minor-league contract last week, threw four scoreless innings for the Gulf Coast League Yankees. ... The Yankees signed sixth-round draft pick, right-handed pitcher Brett Marshall, to an $850,000 deal, a record for that round. Teams have until Aug. 15 to sign their picks. http://tinyurl.com/5svo95 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.109.23.17
