Mussina and Abreu Make Cases for Sticking Around

Every little piece of Yankee Stadium is special, and if anybody doubts
it, consider how Mike Mussina treated his final start there Thursday.
After Mussina left the mound for the final time, he took care to pluck
the dirt from his spikes and preserve it in two plastic bags.

Mussina also got the ball from Manager Joe Girardi, who refused to take
it from him when he lifted him in the seventh inning. The crowd saluted
Mussina with a standing ovation, and he waved his cap with feeling.
He earned his 18th victory of a renaissance season in a 9-2 rout of the
Chicago White Sox.

“Whatever stadium they’re building across the street isn’t going to
be this stadium,” Mussina said. “It’s new and it’s improved, and it’s
going to be great. But there’s a lot of people that have walked into this
building and played on that field, and it’s not going to be around anymore.”

With two starts remaining, Mussina has a chance for his first 20-win season.
He is 268-153 in his career — the same number of victories and one more
loss than the Hall of Famer Jim Palmer.

Palmer was retired by the time he was as old as Mussina, who turns 40 in
December. Mussina is one of several veteran Yankees who will be free agents
this winter, including Bobby Abreu, who homered twice and drove in six runs
Thursday.

Abreu’s future is uncertain; he wants to return and he is still productive,
but he is 35 years old, so the Yankees may hesitate to make a long-term
commitment. Retaining Mussina seems to be an obvious move, especially
because he wants to keep pitching and would probably ask for a one-year
deal.

“I think everybody knows I’m not going to go to Texas or California
to pitch,” Mussina said. “It depends on the situation and who’s
interested and what comes of it.”

Of course, if the Yankees want to keep him, Mussina knows what he
would say.

Mussina survived a 28-pitch first inning Thursday, allowing one run as
the White Sox left the bases loaded. Abreu gave him a lead in the bottom
of the inning with a two-run homer to the upper deck in right, and
Mussina cruised from there.

While the night belonged to Mussina and Abreu, it was at least as
memorable for three other Yankees. First baseman Juan Miranda,

major league debuts.

Sanchez, who attended South Bronx High School and Rockland Community
College in Suffern, was acquired from Detroit in the Gary Sheffield
trade after the 2006 season. He spent most of the last two seasons
recovering from elbow surgery, and the Yankees have converted him
to a reliever.

“It was out of this world,” said Sanchez, whose mother was in the
stands. “The chance to go out there, especially with what’s going

Timing has been a problem for the Yankees as a whole. With their shot
at the playoffs all but gone, they have won five of their last seven
games. They made it look easy Thursday against a team in first place.

1928-29. He had never visited Yankee Stadium before. “This is a dream
for me,” he said, “and I think I’m in heaven.” ...

Joe Girardi was one of many former teammates who persuaded Bernie Williams
to return to Yankee Stadium, which Williams will do for the final game on

in spring training. “I would love to have Bernie around whenever we
can have him,” Girardi said. “I’m extremely thrilled that he’s
going to be here.” ...
