Bronx-to-Cooperstown pipeline begins
Damon's bat, Molina's cleats among items bound for Hall

NEW YORK -- By this time next month, visitors to the National Baseball
Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y., will be able to get a
close-up look at some of the artifacts from Sunday night's final game
at Yankee Stadium.
Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson returned to Cooperstown on Monday
after spending the weekend in New York and brought home with him
several items from the finale and said that there would be more to come.
"We will still work with the Yankees collectively to discuss some more
items that will be donated," Idelson said. "The Yankees have always been
generous with the Hall of Fame. They have a lot of work to do about where
the items will be going, but some will be coming to Cooperstown."
Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson
Idelson, who was the Yankees' director of public relations from 1989 to
1993, has been in direct negotiations with the club's chief operating
officer, Lonn Trost, about artifacts the team intends to donate to the
Hall, which has a special section of the museum devoted to ballparks.
It already features items from Yankee Stadium as well as two other
New York ballparks long gone, the Polo Grounds, former home of the
Giants that used to sit across the Harlem River in upper Manhattan,
and Ebbets Field, former home of the Brooklyn Dodgers, in Flatbush.
In the meantime, the Hall came away Sunday night with several pieces
of history. Yankees catcher Jose Molina, who hit the last home run in
the Stadium, donated the cleats he wore. Johnny Damon gave the Hall
the bat he used for the three-run home run he hit off Baltimore's
Chris Waters in the third inning. Derek Jeter, who earlier in the week
donated the cleats he wore Sept. 16 when he broke Lou Gehrig's record
for career hits at the Stadium, gave Idelson a bat he used during the
final homestand.
Idelson, who attended Sunday night's game with Hall board chairman
Jane Clark, two Hall staffers and 12 museum supporters, was not
surprised by the munificence of the three players in question.
"Derek Jeter has been extremely generous to the Hall during his career,"
Idelson said. "Having his bat from the final homestand on display helps
secure his place in Yankees lore. Jose Molina was very helpful to the Hall
in getting his brother, [Cardinals catcher] Yadier, to donate items from
the 2006 World Series. Johnny Damon already has several of his artifacts
in Cooperstown. He told me he was thrilled that his bat from Sunday night's
game will be there."
Except, the bat Damon used for the home run was not his. He borrowed one
from outfielder Xavier Nady because, as Damon told Idelson, "mine are all
broken."
Damon has been breaking bats at a record clip this year, so the bat on
display from the home run will bear the name of another player.
"Xavier got a chuckle over that," Idelson said.
The items retrieved this week add to a large collection of Yankee Stadium
memorabilia in the Hall. Gehrig's old locker was donated in 1939, the
year the museum opened. Babe Ruth's old locker has been there since 1948,
the year of the Bambino's death. In 1968, the Yankees donated a chair used
by James Farley, former Postmaster General in President Franklin Roosevelt's
administration, where he sat along the first-base line.
When the Stadium was shut down for a two-year renovation after the 1973
season, the Yankees made sure the Hall of Fame received some items. They
included a set of stairs, four Stadium seats, 12 box seats from behind the
plate, a bat rack, a ticket booth, two turnstiles and generic lockers.
"We look forward to continue working with the Yankees on adding more
pieces of the Stadium's great history to the Hall of Fame," Idelson said.
